Completely different entity to ‘normal’ employment. In Football both parties effectively commit to each other for a period of time, if either wants to end that it has to be negotiated to leave. So if a club sacks someone they have a choice either pay them a lump sum or keep paying until end of contract (which would either be end of period or if employee starts work elsewhere). Whereas normal employment is usually an open ended agreement with no end date
