Sad news, just seen on @Oakwellhistorian Twitter feed. Another victim of that indiscriminate disease cancer. Signed by Dave Bassett, and tore his Achilles tendon after only a handful of games. RIP Kevin.
https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/kevin-austin-swansea-city-bristol-2256782 The third confirmed passing of a former red this week. Sad week for our club.
Bloody hell. That's such a shock, he seems to be from our very recent past. 45 is just no age at all. Brings it home that I am getting older. Cancer is such a horrible disease. RIP
https://www.swanseacity.com/news/swans-mourn-kevin-austin Really sad news indeed. I never saw Kevin Austin play, but in a way he still helped me become a life-long Barnsley fan! The Reds were on a pre-season tour in my hometown in Finland back in summer 2000, and even though I had been following them on the internet and joined every single mailing list and forum that I could find, that was the first time I actually got to see them play. After one of the training sessions before the match, I approached Dave Bassett and asked him if they've got any spare shirts that I could buy. Bassett politely said no, but he was very kind and we chatted about football and Finland for a while, and why I had chosen to support Barnsley of all the clubs in the world. Suddenly I think Bassett remembered that they've got an extra shirt somewhere; he told me to wait outside the dressing room, and a moment later he came back with a nice white millennium season ORA shirt and gave it to me. AUSTIN, number 25 - my first ever Barnsley shirt. Apparently Austin was supposed to join the rest of the team in Finland, but then couldn't come because he still hadn't recovered from the injury. It's strange that I was just thinking about Kevin Austin the other day (I knew about his illness), and now he's gone. Rest in peace Kevin
Actually, I just realised that he was playing for Swansea in the play-off final 2006, so that statement is false!
Some of my Lincoln mates knew him. By all accounts one of the loveliest blokes you could ever meet. Such a shame.
