I was looking at one of these the other day though it might make a good christmas pressie for one of the littlies https://www.wickeduncle.co.uk/childrens-presents/magnetic-football-tables
I have all my Subbuteo stuff to my young lad who went on to have 2 girls. No idea if it is still around.
I got a big sheet of plywood board. I can still remember carrying it back from town with my Dad. Then spreading about three or four Subbuteo pitches on it, one worn out footy one, a rugby pitch, cricket pitch and then a new footy pitch on top. It used to play like a new mown bowling green
I had mine out a couple of years ago when we had visitors, one of which had never played it before (he’s Polish). Funnily enough my living room carpet just didn’t grip the pitch properly and I’m sure it did when I was younger playing in our front room. Carpets are obviously not Subbuteo friendly these days
I used to have two battery operated floodlight towers that looked like they were straight from Oakwell. I also had perimeter fencing, but never managed to develop to buying a main stand. The ones in the Subbuteo catalogue were the stuff of dreams!
A proper shop. And my favourite when I was a kid. Always stopped off for a look around on the way back from Race Street baths to the bus station. Happy days.
It was tricky admittedly but the atmosphere of the evening Subbuteo matches under the two floodlights was worth the effort!
Can remember covering certain bulbs on the floodlights so that it just shone through one's in a V shape like the oakwell floodlights at the time
Remember the posters very well. Never actually filled mine out after game 1, like, but I used to have it there for the season, with the teams still in alphabetical order.
That stand of subbuteo teams in John Brittons was a beautiful sight! My favourite kits were West Germany around 1988 and Watford's kits. I remember feeling a bit cheated that Barnsley's kit was usually just plain red without any detail and also substituted for a few other teams' kit ( Charlton? ) I played my own cups so many times that I had to go to the doctor's where I was diagnosed with Housemaid's Knee: quite an embarrassing condition for a ten year old lad to suffer...
Oh the 1990 Cameroon kit was mint as well, especially with the black players which was I think quite a new thing in subbuteo at that point and made my world cup more accurate
