My dad would drive round looking for Quadruple stamps at petrol stations. Then the great fun (it was the 1960s/70s don't forget) sticking them in those tatty little floppy books and taking a full book or more to the nearest Green Shield Stamp shop to exchange for all those things you could never live without !
We used to go to the one on the Moor in Sheffield.
Still got the Scrabble set we got from there around 1970.
Folks don't know they're born these days.......... aaahhhh, sticking stamps in books........

There must of been billions of those things kicking around at one point. Printers must have had a right nosebleed when the bottom fell out of that craze.

My old man collected Pink Stamps from the petrol station. Same idea as Green Shield.

Yes, as a kid, I remember Green Shield stamps. Can't remember what value they had but used to like sticking whole sheets at a time from a single grocery shopping expedition or, as Arabian Ian says, from the garage. I'm sure I can remember a van which used to come round to deliver tea (leaf variety, no tea bags then !) and they also gave their own stamps (not Green Shield) - think it was either Hornimans or Black & Green "the Family Tea" ! For many years in adult life I used to think how strange that people found it worthwhile driving a branded van to deliver only tea to individual houses. Nowadays my wife orders packets of Teapigs delivered and we're all used to shopping from home for low value items - what goes around, comes around.......

Still got items I bought with Green shield stamps. Most useful probably a tack that holds the spades, forks, trowels etc.

Wasn't there a petrol station down Wakefield Road that used to do them around where KFC is now?

I remember those well as well as some petrol stations I seem to remember Tesco doing them - though at the time we did most of our shopping in Hillards in Wombwell that didnt do them. I dont remember us ever actually exchanging them for something but we must have done something with the completed books

I seem to remember that Green Shield Stamps had a value of 0.0075d each in old money.

Speaking of cigarette coupons, A few weeks ago, I left the ignition key switched on after I had put the car in the garage over the weekend. Needless to say the next time I went to get it out the battery was flat. At one point I possessed two battery chargers, but after searching the garage I could not find one. I rang my son who had one of them. He brought charger round and a couple of hours of charging did the trick.

If anyone is still with me, you will be asking "what has this got to do with *** coupons?". Well the box that the charger was kept in was the original box. It was a bit tatty but did the trick. When I examined the box it was addressed to my mother in law (still with us at 85) at an address that she left in 1980. The label had the Embassy cigarette logo on it and the return address was to WD & HO Wills, Bristol. So the charger must have been purchased in the days of *** coupons. My late Father in law did smoke Embassy.

it's not that interesting is it?

Moxon’s Garage, sold Triumph cars, had a pump attendant’s cabin between the petrol pumps.
