Sacked 5 years ago today. I didn't disagree with the decision but was sad, I so wanted him to succeed https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/25171704
Same. He had to go, but I was sad for him after the great escape season. I always thought he was a good bloke. The second half of that 2012-13 season was one of the best I've ever known. Arrogant Hull with their potato-headed manager, turning up thinking automatic promotion was in the bag. They were wrong.
The great escape was all the more miraculous when you consider what happened in the summer and the following season. We've gotten through some managers in 5 yrs haven't we? Flitcroft, Mellon (CT), Wilson, Johnson, Heckingbottom, Morais and now onto Stendel. Some stability for a while would be very much appreciated. One other thought considering Flitcroft. We've had a few instances in that 5-6 year period where fan favourites were treated pretty badly. You think how Hassell was treated by Hill, Steele by Flitcroft and last season, Morais' treatment of Hammill. Wonder if to some its an old fashioned show of strength?
Lots of stuff has been said about lots of managers, but they've all had a thankless task in the championship, and it just gets harder every year as clubs swap between it and the premier league.
My everlasting memory of Flitcroft is dropping Luke Steele and bringing in Mike Pollitt and sticking a Y on the end of all the players surnames, “Steely I’m dropping you cos you’re knocking on a bit, by the way this is your replacement.
Wow that report doesn't make good reading. Six points adrift, worst defence in the league and a one win in three record during his time with us. His biggest downfall was showing loyalty to the great escape squad that wasn't good enough.
His biggest downfall was changing completely the style of play - the squad was clearly good enough as the second half of that season showed
More a good run of form rather than their class finally showing. They had a good run to save us but after the Huddersfield game a big rebuild was needed to strengthen the team.
He completely lost his head. Went from a league-beating 3-5-2 to 4-4-2, for reasons I will never understand.
It really was superb. The effort those lads put in was immense. I've heard people say we were lucky with the Peterborough result going for us, but for us to be in with a chance of staying up on the last day was some achievement. We even managed to fit in a cup run!
Great at motivating people when backs were against the wall but had the tactical nous of a pickled onion
What a day Flicker gave us in Huddersfield. Shame we went down the year after but that few months was magic
The best ending to a season I can remember at the wrong end of the table. Saved us losing a few million quid anall.
He lost the plot. Gave the team that survived improved contracts & then changed the 3-5-2 that made us successful. Played 4-4-2 for several weeks before the sack with Dawson, Etuhu, Perkins & Mellis as his midfield 4 & it was dreadful. Allegedly allowed the squad to be divided & most of his signings were aligned to one agent.
