We're remembering former 'footballing legends' who eventually played against the Reds in the very latter stages of their careers. Aldridge for Tranny springs to mind. It'll not happen now but the likes of Gazza(Boston) Cottee(Barnet) Beardsley(Hartlepool) Waddle(Torquay) etc. Know these didn't play against us but any you can think of.
Martin Peters for the Blunts early 80s, Paul Merson for Walsall around 2004. Oh and Mido might as well have played against us too!
Didn't Aldridge play against us in the early days of his career for Oxford, 1985 ish? I'm sure he missed a penalty in the match where Gordon Owen scored a hat trick for a 3-0 win.
Brian Kidd for Bolton against us in 1981. I think he was sent off too. Was one of the early season games after we were promoted, 3-0 win.
I used to play Sunday morning vets football. One morning we were meeting up in Chingford and were a man down. As we were discussing who we could try to get out of bed Teddy Sheringham came out of a newsagent opposite. We couldn't persuade him. I read in - I think - John Dennis's book the other day that Ian Evans' injury was due to having his leg broken by George Best in 1977 who was then at Fulham. Evans missed 2 years football and otherwise we might never have got him. Best was a classic play-till-you-drop player. After leaving Fulham he played for another eleven clubs.
There was a whole host of that calibre of player when we were in the premier league. Did Gazza turn out against us for Everton?
Am sure Bryan Robson played in a reserve game at Oakwell when he was coming back from injury, think they hed to open Ponty up that neet.
Yeah I remember that well it was our first season in old second div they were relegated from div 1 had some great players such as ex Man City player and Malcolm Allison favourite Tony Henry . Forget who the manager was at the time for them but I think it was Norman Hunter for us .
Teddy Sheringham down at Colchester on a lovely summer's day around 2005. He still looked classy but didn't quite have the aura I assumed he'd carry. We were singing... 'Oh Teddy Teddy, what the effing he'll are ya doing here' to the tune his fans at Man Utd and Spurs used to serenade him with. Can't think of anymore really, sure some will come to me.
Fowler and jimmy floyd hasselbaink when at Cardiff I know we’d player against them previously but still
