Am I right in thinking that Kes was filmed in Barnsley? Arguing with some woman on Facebook claiming it was filmed in Accrington
ar Sheila went to St Helens school and she (and other kids) were extras in the school fight scene. Actually, we are not related, but it is a brush with fame. She's the sister of the photographer who I've heard called Stretch on here. Outed... I'll be in trouble nar.
Apparently I’m wrong , this certain person has their Facebook profile picture as Billy Casper & obviously they are from Accrington
Billy Casper himself or David/Dai Bradley is alive and well stil lives in town. See him on a regular basis lives just around the corner from my house. Still get tempted to shout get down off that crossbar to him whenever I see him but resist the urge.
The football match - an all time classic of the cinema - was filmed at St Helens school. Worth buying the DVD for that alone. Much of the film was shot int’ Tarn but parts were shot in Leeds.
That was the remake....when New York born Billy Casper's Bald Eagle discovers the Enigma machine as it is floating away from the submarine sunk by Bruce Willis.
The Headmaster in Kes was Bill Bowes. He was the head of the PE Department at what was then Hatfield Secondary Modern School near Donny. He was also a selector for the Doncaster Boys representative football teams. I was lucky enough to be selected to play for the Under 11 side and scored in games against both Don and Dearne and North Derbyshire. Woe betide you if you had a bad game. Bill Bowes would hide behind the dressing room door and flick you with a wet towel as you entered the room after the game. He was exactly how you saw him in the film in real life. Definitely didn't want to get the wrong side of him.
I know stretch he's a good lad, used to call in my shop everyday to collect the bags of mail, this was before i fell out with the post office lol
Billy Caspers house was on Parkside Hoyland common. The ruined tower he climbed to get the Kestrel was at the Bell wood near Tankersley golf course. The chip shop he went is at Hoyland common (used to be called Savage's back then ) The school was in Barnsley. The fields he flew the bird in are near the Low stand at Hoyland.Barry Hines wrote it, he worked at Kirk Balk school Hoyland. He based a lot of characters on the staff there and some pupils. I know this because my Mother worked as one of the School secretaries there and she typed his original manuscripts for him. Met him many many times.... a really top man.
