Why are so many people on this forum obsessed with old players coming back, especially Fletcher and Hammill? Fletcher was decent enough for us a few seasons ago in L1 but failed to make any impact anywhere since. Yes it could potentially be a good move getting him back but at the same time could be an expensive disaster. Boro paid in excess of 6 million for him I believe so would not sell on the cheap. With the form of our current strikers and with the decent cameos we have seen from Brown and Victor so far I really dont think we need to spend big on a new striker in January. Also for the money it would cost to get Fletcher back in we could certainly get someone better than him. If we do need a striker in January I would prefer to look at some one like Stockley from Exeter, good age, bang in form and would be much cheaper to buy.
One good goal in Scottish league doesn't mean he's the answer to our prayers. He was dragged off after an hour other week cos he was crap.
Could loan him but where is the long term benefit? He'd be third choice for us as long as Woodrow and Moore are fit. And if he was good again then we'd not be able to afford to buy him.
The long term benefit would be to get us in the Championship , surely that is our object , do you not agree ?. If we do get back , then the budget our new HC receives will determine where we shop, but currently we need look no further than May .
I I disagree with that because I think planning only as far as may is extremely short term and that short term planning is exactly what has got us where we are. Signing short term loan players .not renewing contracts, selling the assets etc. If we plan to have a team capable of scraping up this season it means a huge rebuilding job in just 6 months time and will mean trying to survive in the championship with a new squad rather than a team.
I am debating the merits of signing one additional striker in Ashley Fletcher , contracts & long term policy are a different subject , although I will say that our new owners seem more tuned into this & are starting to approach the problem , with new signings having longer contracts & extending contracts earlier ( Mowatt for example ) . However , my post was just about Fletcher & his affordability which, I believe the best way, would be to try & sign him on loan .
He's got we haven't got, We have got one like him he's called Moncur. Turns it on in 1 game in 5 and then is a waste of a shirt for the other 4.The question is do want championship football at the end of the season. If the answer is yes then we should be bringing in players that will be possibly good enough to play there. Not player's to get out of this league and then start again in the close season
