Any familiar faces on here apart from mine? Aged 14!! I'm sure there will be some who have left us. I found this tonight whilst going through hundreds of photos of my son, who turns 18 tomorrow (Tuesday). It was given to me by Shirley and Roger Montague many years ago after they recognised me on it. It's a photo of the corner between the old Ponty End and the West Stand/Terrace. I'm the one in the Red/Blue/White ski jacket, in front of the bearded bloke in the grey sheepskin coat, front centre. Hope it brings back some good memories.
In the 1963/64 season we played Man Utd in the 5th round of the FA cup & the crowd was just above 38000 . I was on the terrace on the west stand to the left of the dug outs , the area which is unused now , crammed in like sardines but what an occasion . Man u had all their stars playing , Law , Charlton, Best etc & as a young lad who was used to watching 3rd division football, in front of low crowds, it was indeed a memorable day , unfortunately there was no fairy story as we lost 4 nil , but I will never forget that day.
It was actually a reported bigger crowd against Leicester in 1961 , according to Pathe news the crowd was 40,000 . It was the 6th round or quarter final & it was a tight affair that we lost 2 v 1 after extra time , Leicester went on to reach the final but I think they lost to Spurs in the final . Leicester had a certain Gordon banks in their goals when they played us , arguably the best ever English goalkeeper.
Bet there weren't 30000 for the following home game ! Bloody part time supporters ... nothing changes.
Was there also. 8 years old. Man U played in red and we played in blue and I've never understood why.
It used to be the rule in the FA Cup that in the event of a colour clash the home team wore their change strip.
38,076 to be precise. I was there and still have my ticket. Ground Admission 2/6d. That’s 12 and a half new pence! Crushed at the back of the Ponty End first half and could hardly see a thing. Moved to the Kop end at some point where the view was much better, standing by the old sliding gate that was at the corner near the Paddock. If only time travel were possible so that I could go back and witness that again. Filmed record would be great but I’ve never seen any.
We averaged around 7,000 at that time. Bonkers crowd even when you take away the away support. Love to see the ground full, but would love it more if some stayed with us beyond the good times.
I agree but it’s never gonna happen maybe first couple of seasons if we get in prem and a decline after that . It’s interesting watching the bottom half of prem playing search other and the amount of empty seats in not overly big stadiums like Burnley v Bournemouth and Everton v Watford etc
Great photo that mate. Think I was in the old Brewery Stand for that game. Love looking back at old pics like this, probably a sign of growing old.....
