Don't know if it's on catch up. Repeat from 1997 about EU and a referendum. Panel: Tony Benn (Lab) Ted heath (Tory) Frederick Forsyth (author) Liz Lynn (Lib) Ted Heath only one of panel who didnt want a referendum then. Even libs wanted one (presume then they would have abided by the result - but hey student fees- more faces than Juno). Became more and more obvious he'd spun lies about the EEC was to become back in the seventies Tony Benn: "My constituents lend me power to use in parliment. How can I explain to them I've given that power away. It would unthinkable if there were to be more intergration without them having a referendum...... Greater intergration will cause resentment and ultimately lead to wars." Since then we had the Lisbon Treaty (which Blair/Brown promised us a referendum on in 2005 election and renaged on, Brown sitting in a room on his own to sign it Strange how the EU has become such a left wing cause
It's OK mate. All the ills of Barnsley and the rest of the country are because of the Tories. Well... if you come on here anyways.......
Just found it really odd that twenty years ago the right argued for the EU and the left argued against it.
Remember Labour campaigned for out with Neil Kinock leading then having lost job In the party joined gravy train in E U followed by his wife then got job for his son . Now they carp from side lines to stay in because they are on fat EU pensions paid for by you and me . Nothing like champagne socialists .
They'll get their pensions anyway. Meanwhile the rest of us risk being led into the abyss thanks to a referendum which asked people a question they couldn't possibly know the answer to. Cameron needs stringing up.
I couldn’t really care anymore about the EU. It’s about time people started seeing and talking about the real problem here at home and stopped blaming the EU, stopped blaming immigration, stopped blaming everyone except our own government. I despair in a world where people think that politicians such as Rees Mogg, Johnson and Farage have their interests at heart.
I’m don’t usually like to get involved with the Bexit debates on here - I don’t feel adequately informed to do so. My one observation of the current mess we all share in is that with both major parties having no concencus within themselves and as that happens the Tories are inclined to move further Right with Boris or Ree-Mogg waiting in the wings and in the oppposite corner Corbyn who doesn’t even represent his own party’s elected MP’s - just appointed by the card carrying Left. Just seems to me that there is the biggest gap we've ever had between the two parties where I suspect me and a lot of people naturally fall. Not being represented by either.
Actually the gap between the two parties is much narrower now than it was in years gone by ( with the exception of Jeremy Corbyn as leader) in fact the bulk of each party I'm sure would be quite happy to sit on the opposite bench had circumstances dictated it.
I understand what you say about the parties in general but the leadership of each ( if May is replaced by Boris or Rees-Mogg) couldn’t be further apart. Don’t just look at the types of Brexit we could be delivered, given the mandates that would come a long with leadership I fear either side would be delivering policies which don’t reflect a moderate stance.
If we had a decent electoral system, i.e. PR of some sort, both parties would have broken up. I'm a Labour member, but strongly in favour of remaining in the EU, but with the proviso some hard talking is done on a whole bunch of issues. Nationalism is on the rise everywhere & there is a need to readdress what the EU should be all about, i.e. a trading block, not a super state.
Agree but would also add labour as equals. After all some of our children were killed at a concert 36 miles away because labour fancied invading Iraq. A move that earned the labour leaders wife a hell of a lot of kudos in the long run.
Do you not think that the hard talking should have been done 20 years ago before all the country’s politicians took us plebs for granted and decided to live up their own arses? Do you not think that large numbers of people who voted UKIP we’re actually made up of normal people wanting to send a shot across the boughs rather than being knuckle dragging racists? From the people I speak to, this abysmal mess with brexit and the lack of faith in British politics in general has been borne from whichever of the last few governments you want to look at being outrageously out of touch with the British public. In short, it could have all been avoided had they listened to and been strong enough to act on the publics concerns. As it stands, the lot of them are a ******* embarrassment and don’t represent me in any way, shape or form. I never voted in brexit because both sides were lying and trying to bully me. They are still doing it to this day.
The EU does not wish to change. If the EU were prepared to make any meaningful concessions they would have given David Cameron something before the referendum. Or Theresa May after the election. It's the same as the fallacy that we can influence the EU from inside. The EU, Tusk, Juncker, they are federalists.
Not quite true... The manchester bomber was rescued by the Royal navy from Gaddaffi Libya. His family were being persecuted for being too extreme...
