Doesn't seem that long ago watching us open our campaign against them at their place and thinking "This new number 4, Roberts looks good". Sad to see their plight over the last few years.
It wasn't that long ago that first match of the season where the police kept us in there at full time and wouldn't even let fans wait in the concourse so they can at least go to the toilet. Yet next season we could be in the second tier and them having conference north derbies against Stockport and York.
Following Stockport, Workington and Bradford Park Avenue (and others) into the wilderness. It's a long way back. Still can't believe how badly the police behaved on that opening day fixture. I wasn't desperate for the toilet, or feeling claustrophobic, but was bloody angry about being kept in so long. It was a hot day and things could have turned VERY ugly. I've been to very few away games since then. It's not worth it.
To be honest the fixture before under Wilson we sold it out and they gave us some more of their stand I think about 2500 we lost and after a few acted up outside the ground. So when we went there under Johnson the season after they didn't give the further allocation and kept us in after the game so the same thing didn't happen. They handled it poor but it wouldn't have happened at all if we behaved the 1st time round. Hope chesterfield get out of it and back into the football league even though I have never seen us win at that ground been well beaten both times I've been.
A guy I used to work with was a big Chezzy fan. He was always rubbing it in every time they had some sort of result against us, telling me they were just as big a club. He was an annoying little tw*t never to be taken seriously. I bet he's a bit crestfallen these days. They've never been anything like as big as us and he was bitter as hell about it. It just goes to show that you can never take anything for granted though. Neither of us would have thought they'd be heading for the level they seem destined for.
Don’t follow them well but see a few Chesterfield fans through work. General feeling is board keep blaming managers & sacking them when it’s the board who should be getting the boot. Apparently the owners the same guy that messed things up at Wednesday when they were down in League One. Seems a crazy situation given how promising things looked with a new stadium & League One football not so long back.
Exactly and, as I said, it's not worth the hassle. Too many people's idea of an away day is drinking as much as possible and getting into as much trouble as they can manage. I know it's great going to see us if we win (I loved that evening in Rochdale this season for example) but for every pleasant away day there are half a dozen not so pleasant.
Yes, and being proud of their actions, earning the club and all our fans a reputation. They then have the cheek to moan when in fixtures that follow the policing and stewarding is more robust. I won’t take my lad to away games, we seem to have a very large number of such ‘supporters’.
My favourite match at Chesterfield was at the end of 1980. The ground was packed with 17,000 or more, and we were rewarded with the best 0 - 0 draw I have ever witnessed.
Carson and Allen have destroyed that club, my pal is a big spirite and it’s wrong what’s happening there.
Arthur Cox’s time I think and he was able to splash out on good quality players like Phil Bonnyman and Alan Birch. There was a third top signing but I cannot remember his name
I wasn’t angry, I was ******* furious. The police in the ground were an absolute disgrace the way they treated my children. Having said that, I had no problem with the ground staff at all and bear them no ill
Birch was a good player. Wasn't Danny Wilson there? Ernie Moss. Was John Seasman there or was he at Rotherham?
