Being a child of the 60's, the FA Cup was probably more important, or at least as important as winning the league. Cup final day was magical, from breakfast through to the end of the game, didn't matter who the teams were. Breakfast with the teams, coach to the stadium, question of sport and so on. For me now though, it has lost its magic. Is it just me? Don't want to take the edge off today, but I would rather that we had another league match to carry on our good form. Just the opinion of an old fart lol. Am I alone?
It's nowhere near as important as it used to be. I used to be glued to the telly from about 9:00 watching "It's a Knockout" and other such time fillers. Now there's no build up part from a few pundits and "how they got there". The Premier League clubs field weakened teams.and don't give a toss until the semi-final. However, I still think it has the magic for lower league clubs, especially away matches against higher league opposition. We tend to take up our allocation on days like that although there haven't been too many in recent seasons. Would like us to draw Arsenal away one year because I've not been to the Emirates and we owe them one for swindling us out of a top flight place.
No one really cares about it anymore and its not just the premiership sides. Pays off for lower league clubs if they get a big team in the third round. Apart from that I think its (sadly) seen as a hinderance to most.
I was born in the late 70's but still loved to watch Cup Final Day. It all boils down to introduction of the Premier League and Sky Sports why it's not like it used to be for me. There are loads of build videos on YouTube like this one from the 88 cup with Saint & Greavsie.
The magic has gone in general due to the money in the game, the massive over saturation of football on tele, the importance of finishing top four, staying in the prem and indeed getting there. Back when I was growing up it was one of only a small handful of live games on the tele and so it was a very special day in the football calendar. I used to love watching the build up to the game from about ten o'clock.
It has indeed lots it’s magic due to the Premier League greed and the year Man Utd pulled out started the decline. I have heard people say that they should give the 4th champions league slot to the cup winners which would definitely help get the big boys interested again but I don’t think they will ever do it. I like many others used to love being glued to the telly all day on cup final day but thinking about this further I guess society has moved on with so many distractions these days. So even if the cup hadn’t lost its magic in other ways then I think the traditional cup final day routine would have naturally changed anyway. Despite all of the above , I still feel a little romance with the competition whilst ever the reds are still involved. Our run of 2008 showed that there are still some memories to be made (and in my case family holidays to be re-arranged as it clashed with the date of the final - that’s my ‘cheers Kayode ‘ moment for wasting my time with that )
That's the key part. Over saturation on the TV. Football is no worse to watch now than it was 10 or 2 years ago, it can be just as exciting as it was. The problem is its on TV about 50 times a week and it gets boring and repetitive
Loved it in the 90s - our games, Chesterfield in the semi's, some actually quite good all-Premiership games as well.
12.30 kick offs due to tv coverage abroad makes a mockery of the tournament and shows no respect to the fans or traditions of the game.
