He was a good tennis player, but great? Absolute balderdash To be classed as a true legend requires consistency and the ability to adapt and evolve and therefor to be considered a true great in the sport you had to have come out of the six week holidays unbeaten in darton rec. I’ll tell you another fraudster, also ran as well. That Daley Thompson. Multi sport champion my hat. To be that, you had to be the winner at first tennis, then 9 oyle golf on the pitch and put, then bullhead fishing and finally kerbie on the way home. Now that’s true godlike status
I suppose people forget the statement he made in 2006 when asked which team he would be supporting in the World Cup and he said ,”Anyone but England” or “I am the British No1 but I would prefer to be the British Number 1 from Scotland.
Yes, you're right, a throwaway joke made 13 years ago negates a career of three grand slams and 11 grand slam finals. Because none of us have ever taken the piss out of Scotland, or Wales, or Lancashire.
The anyone but England was a joke in and inteview that backfired - he has said many times since he regretted it for the way it has been taken. He is so anti English he even married an English lass
At first I thought that that's a gross exaggeration right there, but actually, that can't be very far from the truth. I'm not a huge tennis fan or anything, but if I had to pick a favourite tennis player, it might just be Andy Murray.
It depends how you measure "greatest sportsman" doesnt it - in terms of sucess Lewis Hamilton would take some beating - if you consider driving a car a sport or for me Mo Farah is a good contender. Murray is certainly up there though and had he been at a time when we didnt have 3 other tennis greats he would almost certainly have had an even more impressive record. Its very sad he has to retire early
Don't let Jarkko Nieminen hear you saying that. Have to agree re Murray's standing among the pantheon of British sporting greats.
Didnt think she was Mexican ! Never heard Trump crack a joke about slovinia - in any case comparing Andy Murray to Trump is a bit distasteful
Well he went one better and was the world number 1 from Scotland. He made a joke about England, I've made many about Scotland in my time. He is Scottish not sure what people wanted from him?
think you might be getting confused with golf there you're absolutely right. i'd forgotten all about that throwaway joke he made in an interview. 12 years ago. i hope he never walks again.
Phil Taylor is the greatest sportsman of the last 25 years. Andy Murray is by far the best British tennis player we’ve had since Fred Perry, I’ve just looked up Fred Perry by the way and not only did he win 10 grand slams he won the doubles or mixed doubles at most of them too! Some going that
He bought into the cliched Scottish hatred of the English and paid a heavy price. Personally, I admire what he achieved by making the very best of his ability. He was not a natural talent a la Federer but a manufactured stroke player and good returner of serve. Didn’t take to him as a personality and would file him with Lewis Hamilton on that front. Not a fan of weeping on TV and wish he would just get on with it or pack it in. Nowhere near the greatest British sportsman of his generation and have to say I’m with Spider re the mother.
Well if people are going to hold a grudge against Murray for a silly joke for over decade then Taylor is tricky sell. With him having a conviction for indecent assault and all.
He's used to winning. If he can no longer compete at that level I don't blame him for his decision. No point being in pain to get knocked out in early rounds. Might as well be more of a husband and parent by being at home more often.
Andy Murray defo one of best Sportsman of our generation, as said not actually a great natural but through pure determination and grit ground his way to top, can’t think of anyone else who has done that in recent years. Add to that the true measure of a person is how they are perceived by their peers, ask any Tennis player they will tell you his time and effort in helping young players is unparalleled in this country. Judy Murray- arguably done more for British Tennis than any other person in the last 50 years, what with her two sons and her work in the LTA
