By all accounts George has been absolutely superb off the field. If he hasn't settled in the north, then I don't think anyone has got any problem with him moving somewhere where he feels more comfortable. Any negativity directed towards him seems directly connected to the lack of correlation between his obvious footballing ability and his mostly abject performances in the BFC shirt, while earning a salary most of us can only dream of.

would you have preferred him sign a new contract then?

Personally I think we will be better off without, rather than signing up a player who has offered very little recently

no, he would leave for free in the summer for me. Barnsley need to make it clear that we only sell when WE want to. The fact that the statement says that he was not willing to sign a new contract tells me that the club wanted him to stay. So the move was orchestrated by the player and his agent, not the club. while ever we are going along with this we will always be a yoyo championship/L1 club.

Good luck to him, clearly a talented player and I don't think he's as lazy as people say, he just never really fitted in here though. Think he will be better as a big fish in a small pond which he might be at Luton, if they can build their team around him but they seem to be doing well without him anyway.

The new contract he wouldn't sign would have been for far less money than his old contract. Why wouldn't he refuse and wait and see if there were any better offers on the table? Absolutely nothing to entice him to stay up North bench-warming on a lower salary. Good luck to the guy, hope he's a success there next season along with Lee, Pearson and any other ex-Barnsley players. Any club, not just Barnsley, is never going to let a player go for free if they can earn a few bob 6 months earlier.

I wouldn't want to work in a business run by you.

A few hundred grand will allow us to bring in another promising player. And they can come in right away as it will also take his salary off the books. It's not like we have millions of pounds laying around gathering dust. Also, why would you want to punish someone for not wanting to sign a new contract? If he wants to play more, which would make sense, he needs to move on. He'd happily run his contract down I suppose and move on in the summer. But for the club it makes sense to at least recoup some of his value before he walks out the door for free, especially for a fringe player.

When we have Dougall and Bahre on the bench, we can do without Moncur. Potts had much more to offer and we don't seem to be missing him, so I won't be losing any sleep over Moncur.

Good luck to the lad, but anybody who thinks he's going to push Luton into the Championship must have been watching a different player to me.

    Onward and upwards...

Professionally offended some people in here. We’ve wished him well in his future career whilst also stating why we’ve taken this opportunity to sell him.

It’s not hard is it? People are just kicking up a fuss for nothing here.

Finally a reasonable comment! Lots of posts about how crap he was, then, don’t sell to a rival cos it’ll strengthen them? At least be consistent, fellow posters! I for one think he’s a loss but doesn’t matter now, does it! Glad we got money, not a stupid loan.

@Runner the main point I am trying to make is not really about Moncur inparticular, I am saying that other players who we cannot afford to lose (moore/cavare/woodrow/thiam/pinnock/lindsay) look at the situation and see an easy way out, instead of earning a move through good performances, all you have to do is have a dip in form, say your homesick then Barnsley will sell you for fear of losing money. All I am saying is that the club needs to adopt a stronger stance.

Good luck to George. He's a talented player, but the points about him not suiting our pressing style & lacking staying power are well made.
On Luton's side, Mick Harford says,
“He’s an exciting player and I watched the game on Sky earlier in the season from my hospital bed. Barnsley were exciting that day, especially in the first half, and George played well in that.".
So I'd say he's a decent signing for them, but not good enough for us, especially on stepping up to the next level.

Maybe WE wanted to sell? What's the point in wasting money on a squad player who struggles to even make it off the bench?

    Proper backwards thinking this.

Good post MullerRed, I like many thought he had what it takes but were sadly proved wrong, the Harford comment says it all " Barnsley were exiting that day , especially in the first half" sums Moncurs time with us up perfectly ….one half but not one full game.
I wish him well, looks like we didn't want him and he didn't want us so take the cash and move on. I'm already watching the clips of Jordan Green who we just signed and can't wait to see him play.
Moncur only needed to hatch Bahre play recently to realise time was up for him...

I can see your point. It's a double edged sword though. If we are known for allowing players to move on, players might be more eager to come, even with interest of slightly bigger clubs. If we were known as hard to get out of, then we might struggle to bring in talent. I suppose in the end it's hard to predict. Personally, I'm ok with the current transfer policy. It keeps us financially healthy while still being able to attract talent. I wouldn't want to see us as Bolton (spending more than you can afford) or Blackpool (apparently it's not a great club to work for under the Oystons).

Selling him because he wasn’t good enough? Not sure I agree with that but others at the Club are better placed than me to judge. Selling him to a promotion rival at the business end of the season - idiotic.
