why do folk get excited by them. As a club we sell players who have, progressed in some instances, for the cash and bring in youngsters to start their own process of progressing, hence weakening our squad mid season. Whats to get excited abart. Answers on a postcard please.
Getting rid of fringe team players like Moncur, and even to an extent Potts, to replace with young and hungry talent on long term contracts is very exciting to me. Simple fact is Moncur has spent the last six months doing the bare minimum to get by, waiting for his contract to come to an end. Potts was clearly itching to go as well. Don't want a single reds player who doesn't want to be here or plan on being here much longer, I'd much rather watch exciting young players grabbing their chance in a top team (like Brown has done so successfully), even if it does mean a drop in quality for a few weeks. We've got some good fixtures coming up, great opportunities to give new blood a chance.
I like to see young players gerrin a chance anall, but cant understand all this eager anticipation and pressure applied to clubs to constantly change personnel just cos the opportunity to do so has arisen. Clubs leaving it late ont last neet of transfers to appease the FIFA manager generation.
Yeah that's a fair point, I don't buy into all of that. To be fair I think most on here would take getting rid of those who want to go for a bit of cash before they leave for free and bringing in one or two players, so not really a change of personnel, more like refining and streamlining the squad a bit.
Av said elsewhere Moncur going is a good bit of business for us, getting cash now before nowt in the Summer.
So that's something to get excited about! Might not fit on to a postcard but there are positives here.
Each transfer window allows you the opportunity to evolve the squad and shape it the way you want it. Especially with a new Head Coach and style of play. So far we've had one transfer window where the aim was to maintain the squad that was relegated, which was a success. It also saw us sign Dougall and Woodrow who are arguably two of our more exciting players. Yes you've got the worry that the Championship vultures are circling for your best talent, but if you keep them at bay, move on fringe players who are offering nothing, and bring in improvements to the squad for the promotion push, that's exciting no? If it plays out that we've lost Potts for big money and Moncur for a fee rather than a free, and bring in Green and Woodburn. That's an exciting transfer window for me and an improvement to the squad.
Back in the pre-window days, I used to love getting the Chronicle on a friday and there being a chance of a new signing announced(or that someone has left)week in, week out. I can still remember the excitement that we had signed a proper exotic sounding, Dutch centre half from TelStar call Arjan De Zeeuw(and sat with my mates trying to work out how you pronounced his sodding name). Now, the months of September to late December is sterile and boring on the transfer front, which means the anticipation builds for January which created an artificial buzz. That and Sky Sports News building it up as a big event that lots of the younger end have baught into.
Apart from being aghast at Potts described as a fringe player (to an extent!) I can agree that there is interest in new players coming in and others moving on. Even at the end of a window though it is often impossible to tell whether the squad is stronger or weaker.
