The thing is, when austerity measures were put in by this government it was going to create a vacuum. The Tories were clever by leaving the budgeting to the local councils, which in turn meant it was going to collapse but they could blame the local council, it wasn't austerity, its your local labour, Lib Dem, Green council that was to blame.

Conversely is also gave the local governments the opportunity to play politics in some instances and blame the government for everything.

Not one political party is working on behalf of the best interests of the people.

Politics has become tribal, more tribal perhaps than when Thatcher was in power, and the country is becoming more and more fractured as a result.

Public services are rotting, and will take huge investment to get it back. The NHS continues to crumble, roads are pot holed to ****, crime is increasing and we are on the verge of economic uncertainty.

Every party is to blame, the Tories more than anyone.

They are winning the propaganda battle though. There's people I know who are Barnsley through and through sharing speeches by Michael Gove lamenting Corbyn in his closing speech before the vote of no confidence like he has their backs, like he is somehow better for them than a centre left politician who wants to break the establishment that is at the forefront of the divide of this country.

The world has gone mad. Austerity has caused this reduction in life quality, nothing more, nothing less. It isn't immigration, it isn't the workers fault.

It was Austerity caused by greedy bankers in the City losing all of our money, then making us all pay for it. Those bankers who as soon as we leave the EU with no deal will all **** off abroad and stick 2 fingers up to the country that saved them, all whilst pocketing millions in bonuses.

Labour have been atrocious at setting the record straight since 2010. For a long time, under Ed, they accepted responsibility for the economy, rather than argue it was the bankers all along. Corbyn has been equally pathetic in being strong enough to challenge this government to make them pay for probably the worst decisions for a community such as ours in history. The Labour movement should be unstoppable right now as the working classes get hammered. It should be a foregone conclusion.

The Propaganda war has been won by the right wing and it is only going to get worse. When lads from Barnsley, start lauding Tory speeches and thinking a slightly left wing Labour Party is evil, then the world has definitely gone ******* bonkers.

I don't think Barnsley is as safe labour seat as everyone is thinking I for one will never vote labour with Jeremy C in charge.

Please tell me you are not joking.. Labour could field an imaginary person and the majority of Barnsley would vote them in without hesitation, quoting either I've always voted Labour, my parents vote Labour or the Tories shut down the pits.. This is despite Labour doing absolutely zilch for the town except take it for granted as a safe seat.

I mentioned in other threads, if we were a marginal seat, we would see them fighting over what to offer us, better budgets, whatever. But us Barnsley folk just shoot ourselves in the foot voting for Labour in such high numbers. Even if it is a vote for an independent candidate or one of the smaller parties, nothing will improve until the seat becomes competitive.

Austerity has been a disaster and the way Labour responded was woeful. Completely agree that Ed M and latterly Corbyn got it completely wrong in not highlighting the issue being the banking practices that started in the US and then swiftly snowballed across the world, and particularly in the UK. Instead public services were butchered in just about every area (though I really think its appalling how moneys given can be frittered still, in most London boroughs you see perfectly good pavements being ripped up for an inferior more cheaply fitted alternative that will need doing again in 5 years).

The moment they accepted blame, it was done, the tories must've been grinning from ear to ear.

Aside from that though, there are many ex labour voters who will not vote for labour now (me included) that's not through brainwashing, but from viewing the current set up of labour, the ridiculousness of many stances while facing the weakest govt there must surely ever have been. it will be very interesting to see what happens at the next GE and just how 16.14m voters will judge the parties that have completely turned their backs on them.

Again out of interest mate, what is it thats particularly stopping you from voting labour. I understand that Corbyn the Leader leaves a lot to be desired, its definitely his Achilles heel, but from a policies perspective what is it that stops you from voting for them, especially considering the current situation within the government.

There are plenty of things I disagree with, some moderately, some significantly and the timing of them in particular should he get into power (which I really cant see because of where labour have lost their majorities, Scotland in particular). However, the fundamental issue I have is the stance on Brexit and the approach of trying to appease the minority of leave voters in labour ranks, while completely ignoring the pro remain voters. I simply can't support a party that doesn't want to be in Europe, so everything else is less significant for me.

I think that of all politicians in the main. Every single one of them, know that Leaving is going cause chaos for millions of people, but instead of doing whats best for us all, they won't say what they actually feel because they are scared that it will alienate 50% of their constituents which in turn endangers their own jobs in government. They would rather save one and gamble millions of jobs instead.

Thats across all parties, not just one.

I'm a remainer and feel let down by the labour party, but I'm more intent in getting rid of this government first because for all intents and purposes, the decision to leave isn't changing.

With another government in place after we leave, we might at least have a better chance of recovery.

For me, the only chance of recovery is to remain/rejoin the EU. I don't want this govt at all, yet I fear Corbyns policies, lack of detail and inability to strategise would mean an even worse impact on the economy. Personally, I think the worst thing you could do after leaving the EU and seeing the impact on tax take and increase in welfare payments would be the compound impact of increasing tax and privatisation of listed companies. Businesses certainly don't need encouragement to leave these shores, and many are now starting to announce and come clean the moves they've planned as contingency as time has run out.

I was in Vilnius over the weekend and i've mentioned many times before, its telling how much infrastructure is being put in place in countries across Europe. Vilnius just another of them. Beautiful city too... fantastic people and whenever I travel, I look at the way of life of our friends on the continent and just can't help but feel we've got it all so horrendously wrong in the uk.

He is the leader and makes the spending decisions
I know that Tory cuts are deep but Barnsley is the worst area I have been to for Litter
If they cleaned up twice a year it would not be too bad but they have done nothing for years
They spent a fortune on the Birdwell round, come round and round again roundabout before not finishing it through short of money on the monstrocity
They could have cleaned all Barnsley up treble with that waste of money.
They use cut backs as an excuse

How much money was wasted when Barnsley was part of the Peoples Republic of South Yorkshire back in the 1980s? The socialist councils of the area declared it a demilitarized and nuclear free zone. Money was spent on subsidised travel. The Red Flag flew on Sheffield Town Hall on May Day. The councils rebelled against rate capping All this culminated in the Miners' Strike, when the Thatcherite government got its own back and the coal industry was destroyed.

Since then the town has gradually changed into a low wage economy, where buy to let landlords outside the area prop up the low end of the property market by renting to workers (many of them immigrants) who work in the large warehouses such as Xpro logistics. Money has been spent in improving road links - the Dearne Valley Expressway, Park Springs, Cudworth bypass and new light industry has been established. A lot of money has been spent improving areas such as Grimethorpe and the mining areas to the east of the borough. Some of the money came for the EU of course. All the borough's schools are nearly new. The town centre is undergoing refurbishment. The roads are not falling to pieces -I reported a subsided manhole cover to the council a couple of weeks ago. 10 days after the report a team arrived and fixed it - not a small job. Three way traffic control and about four hours work.

Yes there are problems - litter and graffiti and eyesores remain - some of it the fault of the residents. There is a hard core problem with drugs and drug users. Educational standards remain low despite the new schools. Income levels are lower than the national average and this is a big issue. There is a big drinking culture which leads to disorder and rubbish on the weekends, as well as violence and health problems. Obesity and poor health go hand in hand with all this.

Some good points there. Corbyn has completely changed the narrative on austeritu and has done a good job on that. Not sure how anyone can think otherwise but other than that agree with most of it.
