Watched Ipswich a fair few times at college and rooted for them. More recently it's been Witton Albion.
Always remember Kenny Burns when he was with us being asked who’s results he looked out for and he answered “Barnsley Reserves”. Like him I don’t believe in a 2nd team.
Celtic. Going up tomorrow to watch the Hibs game. Been going up since 89 with a group of Lads from S Yorks.
When I was 9 my dad took me to my first Barnsley game and there was no looking back. Prior to that I'd watched footie occasionally on TV and followed West Ham. Think it was cos my dad had bought me a geoff hurst football in the late sixties and I always admired Clyde Best for his fortitude when even his own fans booed him. By some strange quirk of fate I got a free ticket for the 1980 cup final and watched them beat arsenal (in the arsenal end - LOL). I've been to Upton Park with the reds a couple of times and no doubt where my loyalties lie now but I do find I watch out for their results. A bloke from Essex has recently moved into our village who is a lifelong Hammers fan but he wants a team to watch up here. He's been taken to Huddersfield and Washday (refuses Leeds) and I'm taking him to the Sunderland game (hopefully) so we may become his second team
Celtic, family from Glasgow. I tend to go up for one game each season. Used to be more when I was younger and I'd go up with my family to visit my grandparents who are now long gone.
Lincoln City. A lot of friends support them, and I went to watch them regularly when I lived in Lincolnshire. I've had some great nights at Sincil Bank, and I'm delighted to see them doing well again after several horrible years near the bottom of the Conference. If we stay down this season it'll be very weird seeing my two teams meet in a league fixture. I was terrified of the possible ribbing I'd get when we played them in the league cup in 1999. Luckily we beat them 4-2, and I don't think we've met since.
Hanwell Town. Decent non-league club in west London. My mate & colleague played up front for them, then turned out for our Sunday league side the next day. He scored 99 goals in 3 seasons at Hanwell and got himself a move to Farnborough Town, then Hayes I think. Brief trial at Brentford somewhere along the way. Anyway, went to watch Hanwell regularly as it was our nearest ground. Nice clubhouse there. Few good away days including coaches to the London Senior Cup final, which they won. Always look out for their results.
I used to work with a diehard Frickley fan. His name was Derek Clayton. His three passions in life were his devoted wife Jean, the local Church Choir and supporting Frickley Colliery home and away. Learned a couple of years ago that sadly, Derek died soon after I moved to come and live this over this way. If a Donny fan in our office was bemoaning how bad the Rovers were playing, you could always rely on Derek saying " why dunt tha' cum and watch Frickley pidge."? A real lovable character was Derek.
I like to watch Umpti dumpti and all his other fat mates running abart on a sunday morning, throwing their kebabs up all around the touchline. Football at its roots, Cant beat sunday soccer.
In 1961 there was a craze at school for collecting programmes and two of the top teams at the time were scheduled to meet in a cup semifinal. The two clubs were Burnley and Spurs. In order to impress the rest of my class I wrote to both clubs for a programme for the game. I got a reply from Burnley written on the back of my own letter "we will not gave any, try Villa Park" (the semi final venue. The response from Spurs was different "we will not have them, because they will be printed by Villa Park. We thought you might like this instead". In the envelope was a programme for Spurs v Dukla Prague in the European Cup. You've got to love a club like that.
I was born in Scunthorpe, and my first two games were their pre-season friendlies against Liverpool in 1980 and Spurs the year after. Both before my first Barnsley game (we moved here in 80, and my first game was v Cardiff in 81/82).
AFC Wimbledon. I went to see the reformed club a few times on their way back into the league. I thought they'd do OK this season when they held us to 0-0 in our first home match of the season, but they look like they're on their way down now unless Wally can produce something very special.
Patrick Thistle when I lived for five years in Glasgow. Wouldn't go near Celtic or Rangers with all the trouble their fans caused. This was the late 50s, so it might have changed today.
Grimsby Town, my Uncle took me to my first few professional games and saw them in the old 2nd Division against Newcastle U, Watford and Bristol C. We also have good friends in Hungary. We were introduced to DVTK who play in the city of Miskolc. Seen their ground develop from a old concrete blocked, caged intimidating place to a very modern environment.
Dulwich Hamlet, struggling this season but now back in their rightful home after the Mayor and local MP and councillors assisted in the dispute with the hedge fund/ developer owners where they had been evicted. Been getting home crowds of around 3,000 which isn't shabby at all.
Another vote for AFC Wimbledon for the way they handled an absolute injustice and got together to completely recreate their club and get it back where it belongs.
