Yep. Got taken to Oakwell as a babe in arms. So when the remember your first match thread crops up I've no chance. Can remember my first rusk though.
Me too. Left to my own infantly devices, I was mad on Leeds for those know no better years. Then my dad took me to Oakwell, and I saw the light.
Please can admin amend the title. Opening the BBS with this at the top of the page has put me in a bad mood. KRs The grammar police
No ! You should be made to carry the cross of shame forever, then everyone can point at you and whisper "it were him that did it." Anyway it makes posts correcting you seem stupid then.
As I said on a recent thread my dad took me & my brother to our first match in the 1967-68 season but he had no affinity with the club, he moved to Wombwell from Hull in the mid 50’s so he was a Hull City and Hull KR fan. For the next few years he occasionally took us to Oakwell but he preferred going to Hillsborough to watch 1st division football. In 1974 we decided we were old enough to go to football on our own so my brother (13) and me (11) started going to Oakwell regularly, 45 years later we’re still usually the first punters into the WSL for home matches.
Nope, been a red since I was 6 years old. And a long time ago that was too. I've been to a few other games that didn't involve my beloved team and they've occasionally been quite exciting but really, it's like kissing your sister; all very nice but not as good as the real thing.
I was a pretty late bloomer. Wasn't into footy until around 2001 (around 9-10 yr old) when I started watching it on telly. Then the 2002 WC came round and that's when I properly started going to watch the Reds. My Oakwell journey started from Division 3 in admin. Feels like 3 lifetimes ago.
my dad took me all over when i was a nipper, hillsbro, bramall lane, millmoor n elland road, but the bug bit me in 77 at the well and that was that, the ups the downs, the tears the smiles i wouldent change it for the world,ps a never took my 2 lads anywere else n theyve been going since 05.
No, I'm ashamed to say I took after my much older brother initially, he was and still is a Wednesday fan - though he'd rather play golf now. Dad was a Barnsley fan but used to work most Saturdays so didn't go much. Then dad took me to a few games when I was about 6-7 and I've never looked back.
Came to the UK in 2006, didn't really have a team for a while. One night I was with some friends of mine watching Match of the Day, it just so happened to be the FA Cup and no one knew the scores. So Liverpool vs. Barnsley comes on, everyone joked about how Liverpool should kill them, making fun of the Barnsley accent etc. so when Barnsley won I just said I'd support them. Now I've been to Oakwell a bunch of times, been to away games, and Barnsley are my team.
My first few games at Oakwell are a blur tbh mid sixties . Can remember complaining mi tooers were cold and being told to shurrup n watch match. Late sixties early seventies going wi mi mates and were a case of gerrin in If turnstile operator lerrus In or we managed to climb wall with glass on top we had no money sometimes waiting while last fifteen mins when gates were opened to let fans out . I wouldn’t say I was born a red , no BFC bibs or romper suits in them days , to my knowing anyway. I can remember players etc but I wouldn’t say I was that enthusiastic it consumed my life . There were games I looked forward to but plenty of meh with Workington, Newport Bury etc . If wasn’t made a red I became one on where I was born and me love of watching /playing football . I could just as easily been a Rover,Miller etc based on my parental geography. Thank God i was born in Barnsley. And I’m not religious
Always been predominantly a Barnsley fan although as others have said when I was in my teens I also used to go to Leeds with some mates up to the early seventies. Its probably hard to imagine for younger fans, but at that time it was virtually one man and his dog at Oakwell and at that age you used to want to experience crowds and a good atmosphere, and tbf Leeds had a bloody good team then. Funny though through evolution, can't stand them now!
Could see the floodlights from my bedroom window as a kid? Mi mother and grandad were big Rotherham fans and did their best, but I think I was about 6 when Barnsley beat Rotherham on the telly while we were at mi Uncle Jack’s house for a family party. I can’t remember if he was a Barnsley fan or not, but I can remember him encouraging me to support them that day - maybe he just wanted to wind mi Grandad up. Been faithful ever since and even mi Mother comes with us when we are back in the UK now. My little lad (7) has not had the luxury of any choice in the matter though, but he exacts he revenge on me by costing me a fortune in the club shop. He did complain that it was too noisy when Barnsley scored 2 agin Posh on Boxing Day! I am worried that he prefers 0-0 draws!
