Ethan looked absolutely gobsmacked when the Ref pointed to the spot. I've watched a re-run of the incident on the Sky highlight video and have to admit, it looked harsh in the extreme.
For much of the season, in my opinion, Pinnock has had excessive praise. I think he's played well for the most part, but not to the levels that some have waxed lyrical about. Today I thought he was excellent. As was his central defensive partner. I didn't think it was a penalty when I was at the game. Having now seen the highlights I can understand why it was given but I still think the decision was incorrect. What it definitely wasn't was a red card. The thought never entered the referees head. He had no intention of even booking him. I saw it as a tangle, the ref as a foul. You win some you lose some. But it's impossible to view that without prejudice and come to the conclusion it's a sending off.
How recent? Roberts was sent off for conceding a penalty against Birmingham. If the ref considers it a deliberate foul, I thought he could issue a red and a penalty.
Laws were changed 2 seasons ago I think. Unless it’s a blatant foul with no attempt to play the ball you don’t get sent off and only a pen given optional yellow card. I didn’t think it was a pen anyway and having seen the replay still don’t. In this case both players were going for the ball and got tangled no way was that a red card. Ref didn’t even think it worthy of a yellow
On replay it looks like the ref just finally gave in after the 4th or 5th appeal from them, never a penalty, they just kept on at him until he eventually crumbled like a digestive in a cup of tea.
Looked like a tangling of legs and/or their player saw that he didn't have any control over the ball and decided to throw himself on the floor.
Looked a poor decision in real time and watching the highlights!! Just a poor refereeing decision. What was it with the Ref today. Had a good 80 mins then completely fell apart. Very odd.
I took my mate who hadn't been for a couple of seasons and pointed Pinnock out before the game. I told him how highly he was rated. Like Jay i hadn't been convinced he was quite as good as people were claiming. We then sat and watched him demonstrate that he is.
Thought all the back 4 had a good game and it was a shame the ref seemed to give a token penalty because the lads deserved a clean sheet.
Obviously you're entitled to your view, however bizarre it is, but why use such words about one of our best players?
I think Pinnock should be commended for keeping his cool in what was a poor decision given against him. Pretty much like the penalty decision at Sunderland. Love his temperament, totally professional.
