A thread on here not long since saying they thought it was where the bus stop is across from the Manx. This picture might help, looks like it was where the roundabout is.
It's hard to believe it's the same road, things have changed so much. It also looks a lot steeper than it is now.
I'd say it was probably more like where the central reservation is now, considering the narrowness of the road on the photo.
It was number 27 so further down than the manx, look at the top left of this image and it shows you where 28 was. Manx is across from number 41.
It looks like it was roughly where the Alhambra Centre is now. You can see the Wigfalls building and the roundabout beyond in this photo.
Noticed the name Wigfalls in the above image. I wonder if there was any connection with a furniture store on Silver Street Doncaster, called Barker and Wigfalls.? Used to sell top quality gear. Some years later along with Steadmans Taxi office and St Peter in Chains Catholic Church the shop was demolished to make way for one of the biggest offices in the Town the DHSS ( which locals christened the Dole office.)
I'd agree with that. Needs a plaque, we're supposed to be promoting a community club, there's no museum or anything.
Remember buying computer games from Micro Fun that was in that row of shops where the wigfalls is on the photos
Barnsley always looks better - looking to me in those days and before. God knows what the council were doing when they demolished the older buildings
My Dad used to own the shop next to the Clarence although the hotel had gone by the time he bought it. He had a bathroom shop there but the council compulsory purchased it and the business off him when they built the Alambrah. Spent many a school holiday working there selling bathrooms (and going into MicroFun)
My granddad always told me to get off the bus there and never to ride all the way through to the bus station. The nearest thing I had to a sex education in them days.
