Any Kirk Balkers on here ? Went 67-72 teachers then were Boggy Marsh geography, Ronnie Hallam sport, Barry Hines, Mr Green the maths guy, Mr Flynn history, Miss Dunnett headmistress, Mrs Tye German teacher, Mrs Greaves French teacher,Mr Harrison English. Remember Mr Crow and a few more as well. My favourite was Miss Richards the PE teacher. Was it Mr Hodgetts the mad science teacher very fond of throwing board rubbers at you. I threw one back and got kicked out of the lesson
My Mother was the secretary to Mr Roby and Miss Dunnett. She typed a lot of Barry Hines manuscripts for him to send to the publishers.... and yes even 'A kestrel for a Knave' Margaret Thompson was my Mother. Sadly she passed away 10 years ago....I desperately Miss her.
82 - 87 Loved my time at Kirk Balk, especially the Sixth Form. Ronnie Hallam was still around, but his Rocket days were over.
Sorry to invade but just posted on the Wombwell thread about a mate of mine who went to Kirk balk called Mick. in his 70’s. Got on about 2 teachers called ‘whack em’ and ‘smack em’ we were rolling about. several on us reminiscing about them days when in Bloomfield rd club afore Blackpool match.
I was at Kirk Balk but from 2003 to 2008 so understandably, none of those teachers ring a bell with me. Decent school, I liked it.
86 - 91. Enjoyed my time there. Mr Marsh, Ronnie Hallam and Mr Sidebottom were the stalwarts. Special mention to Steve Creek, sadly no longer with us but a fantastic English teacher and Rugby and Cricket coach. Top bloke.
79-86. Boggy Marsh, Steve Creek especially got me playing rugby, Ronnie Hallam, Steve Wilson the physics teacher was a rum un. Keith (aka Billy) Holt too. Mad Mac the maths teacher always wore his tie outside his jumper. Loved Brian Parkinson the lefty economics teacher. Too many more to mention.
Moved to Barnsley in 87 and went to kirky before leaving in 89 madame Wilson my form teacher and Stacy was head of year
Yes, in the 80s, secondary school & 6th form college. Creeky was my English teacher in the 6th form. He told me that I would get a First if I went to Uni and studied English - so I took Sociology instead. Should have listened.
Sorry lads 1957-1961 but great times.Earlier teachers included Mr Fiddler,Brown,Hawksworth,Mann and Pearson.
I went to Kirk Balk from 59 to 63 when it was the original two quadrangles, with two heads, boys at one end and the girls at other, never the twain shall meet. I can still remember the stroke of the cane on my right hand from "Ben" Roby because my work was not neat enough and the slipper on my backside from Mr Fiddler, the music teacher (I kid you not) for some forgotten misdemeanour. Someone earlier mentioned a couple of teachers that I remember well; Firstly Ronnie Hallam the sports teacher, who said that he had plaid for Rotherham United. I remember him turning up for a sports lesson in an brand new bright red tracksuit with a FA coaching badge stitched on. He was always up for joining in football and on that day was bearing down on goal when our fullback Neville Cutts (I think), upended him and he finished up sliding what seemed like half the pitch in the mud. He was not best pleased with his totally mud stained track suit. Its hard to believe that there were no showers in those days so all who played spent the rest of the day caked in mud, bearing in mind most of us still wore short trousers. Another true story regarding Mr Hallam occurred when we got a new hard all weather cricket pitch. On the first day he decided that he was going to be the first to bat on the wicket. He put a two shilling piece (more than a weeks pocket money then) on the middle stump and said that any one who could hit the stump could have it. Our fast bowler (?) Bell, as you can guess, took his middle stump out first ball. I was the wicket keeper and couldn't decide whether to catch the ball or the two bob piece. Secondly the teacher who I have still got a lot to thank was Mr Green who taught maths. He was the one who got me to understand and enjoy maths, which has been instrumental in my career over the past 50 years. So thank you Mr Green I owe you a lot. The only thing that I cannot forgive them for is not letting us have the afternoon off school to go and watch the FA cup 6th round repay against Leicester City in 1961.
Did you know that Ronnie Hallam is the P.E.Teacher, that Brian Glover's character in Kes is based on? True, honest.
Could neck a pint in half a second as well could steve .I also remember Mr wragg history teacher big reds fan managed us in my first year at football got to cup final at oakwell lost 3-2 to penistone in last min of xtra time was gutted .
Remember watching the first team get to the final of the school's u16 FA Cup at Oakwell, drew 2-2 in the final with a Posh school called I think raynes park from surrey. They shared the trophy. Mark Crossley had replaced Billy Casper in goal by then.
If I remember rightly his first name was Horace. I was in S1 for my 5 years there so he taught us for all 5 years. Old school, pardon the pun, but good with it
