My Dad rang me this morning with the upsetting news about the East Stand car park. Being 89 and a cardiac patient, he, like other members who have already posted on here, relies heavily on this car park pass to enjoy supporting the club he has watched since a boy. Since the summer and Dad's move from Barnsley to be near me in York, our match-day routine is finely tuned and we sit in the car, keeping warm, listening to Radio Sheffield until it is time to make our way steadily to our seats. As lifelong supporters and East Stand Season Ticket holders, we love our trips to Oakwell and are now very worried about next season. Dad will ring the club to talk to them and I shall write to them. I agree that a Fanzone might be an exciting new venture and may benefit many but I hope that an important minority will also be valued by the club and that Dad's needs can be accommodated, too. He is not a Blue Badge Holder.
It sounds like exciting news about a fan zone but I really hope the club can find a way to help out those who rely on this car park.
Seems to me, the biggest issue here is that many folk who park in the East Stand car park do so because of mobility issues. This kinda gives the club false data in a way., as they probably don’t know fully the problem. Hopefully they’ll release some more dedicated spaces to the corner where the bollards are - then it’s still a short walk for most. Not everyone wants a blue badge - and I get that. My Grandma was the same - too proud and didn’t want a fuss.
None have been submitted for planning - checked the portal. So can only assume it’s a marquee - therefore wouldn’t need planning as it’s a temp feature. I guess if it’s a success, Something more permanent might come along.
I'm sure Conway now realises we don't get the temperatures of Nice and has ordered a few gas heaters for it.
It All the very best to you & your family, Grandfather Tyke (ditto OnYerTyke, ATAW & all those affected). It's upsetting for the whole family if the patriarch has to give up their season ticket because of this. Your determination is admirable, but the South Stand backup will be unreliable & I hope the club will keep a place for you within the East Stand area.
A guy at work was just telling me he got the letter says his dad who he takes wont be renewing and he probably wont go either as a result, a real shame.
Would there be anything wrong with allowing disabled fans and accompanying people to park behind the North Stand where the players park? When I've looked there's always a lot of spaces in there and a gate to go through with someone on duty. Surely they could open up an area suitable for badge holders' cars?
Surely they will listen to individual problems .Found management to be quite amicable to individual problems .Not in the business of loosing supporters .Sure they can come up with a solution.
Yeah we're much better than lots of clubs. At Walsall there was no match commentary for my mate, and the only disabled toilets were in the home section.
I'll be very interested in hearing what the club intends to do about this. I don't think anyone envisaged the Fanzone inconveniencing so many people. I certainly don't want anything to do with it if these people aren't looked after.
Does the club own the land at the opposite side of the entry road? That seems to have been cleared in the last few months? Could we not develop that?
All issues aside, and I'm sure they'll get everything sorted, it's positive that they are already working on improving the matchday experience
I think you are right about the Club not appreciating how many people this will effect. I transport a gentleman who is in his 80's, a season ticket holder for over 30 years, who will have no chance of attending if we can't park there. Also my dad and his mates, 4 or 5 of them, all in theirs 70's also park here, not had chance to talk to him yet, but at least 2 of them have difficulty walking distances so no idea what they would do. I think the Club ought to do some sort of survey to get an idea of the people that use the car park and try to come up with a solution, as I can see numerous people NOT renewing their season tickets if this goes through.
I’ve said earlier - it’s not really the club’s fault. Majority of folk affected aren’t parked as disabled users, just regular users. So the club won’t know how many folk are going to be genuinely affected by it. I’m sure they will look to assist though- the club are always looking to help where they can - and have proven this in recent times. Hopefully it’ll all be sorted.
Is this 'Fan Zone' just a ploy to make more money by selling more alcohol to supporters? I've seen the experience at some of our best racecourses spoiled in this way.
