Are incredibly poor. Just watched the highlights on Quest, the obvious massive error involving us was the Pompey winner. But that aside, if you get chance to watch the Walsall Southend highlights give them a watch. Just as important for both teams, a free kick came into the box the goalkeeper has fumbled it, just as the Southend player pulls his foot back to score into an empty net the referee blows for half time, would’ve put them 2-0 and they’ll probably go on to win it. Not finished there, at 1-0 the ref gives Walsall a last min penalty (soft in my opinion too) and books a Southend player, his second booking of the game but fails to show him a red card. The lad scored to equalise but if that result comes back to cost Southend their place in league one next season it’s sickening. Point is the amount of incompetent officials we have in this country is concerning.
I suppose at the end of the season you can rarely argue against that statement. However the referee has cost them 2 points yesterday to which they would be out of the relegation zone.
With the amount of money around, even in Leagues 1 and 2, I think it's madness that refereeing at these levels hasn't yet been professionalised. The FA or Football League should set up regional bases for them to be attached to and train at during the week, and they should be paid a decent salary.
However, I'm sure we don't know how many points Southend have actual gained by fortuitous decisions either.
I don’t know about Southend but I can think of several incorrect decisions in Sunderland’s favour giving them points and yesterday’s for Pompey. How many incorrect decisions have given us points this season I can’t think of any. In any case the ref at Walsall was really poor. Which was the OP’s point
If you're all so brilliant at it, why haven't you taken refereeing up. Bet most of you wouldn't even pass a simple test on the rules.
Referees don't go out of their way to make crap decisions. I'm sure ALL teams in the league would be able to point to crap decisions that have gone against them.
Putting the Southend position to one side, i actually agree. The standard of refereeing has been so so poor and Quest last night looked like a showcase for the lack of quality of officials.
So we can't comment when someone who is supposed to be professional can't even do their job adequately? After we've paid money to watch the game under the belief that the officals are upto the task? The game is supposed ot b edecided on who is the better team on the day, not on who gets the rub of the green from the ref.
