Was that when Don Givens missed the penalty to keep them up? Heard the RS replays of that, and that still makes me laugh thinking about it. The game early that season when Glavin rang rings round Martin Peters was brilliant too.
Yup, that's the one. Three minutes from time it was 0-0 in a match that Walsall needed to win to avoid relegation (United simply had to avoid defeat). Walsall were awarded a penalty, which they scored. Then, with a minute to go, United were awarded a penalty. John Matthews, the ex-Arsenal player, was the delegated penalty taker. However, he suddenly didn't want to take it. Givens stepped up, took the penalty, missed it and United were relegated.
Yep. 17 and full of ****, probably. Ponty End, then on the pitch at the end. What a ******* hypocrite.
You need to move on, you hooligan, you. Was the best Barnsley Team the Hunter team. I think 95% of those there at that time would agree. That said this season has been one of the best i've witnessed, definitely top 10 & I've been watching since 74/75. Excited, but like every Barnsley fan, not over confident of what may happen.
I was there. We used to stand on the corner between the Ponty and Brewery Stand at the time. We thought it was going to happen when we had the 4-goal lead we needed, with Rotherham drawing 1-1 at the time. A Plymouth winner didn't come though and Rodney 'We've got more hair than you' Fern got Rotherham's winner 10 minutes from the end. We also then conceded one. If it had been 3 points for a win, we would have finished 3rd instead of 2nd and been promoted by only 1 point. We drew a lot of away games that season.
No lad it was very foggy and a lot of muck stacks. Fond memories of being in Ponti being carried from the surge when ever we scored.
Lol, I'm sure I followed you on. It was a different scenario back then though, there was no tradition of a lap of honour. Everyone ran on, scragged the players then they went up into the directors box and sprayed champagne about.
Dave Gwyther ex Rov scored that day. Rotherham went all season at home unbeaten and only conceded eight goals.
Yes, we used to have to get there early to drive the cows off and try to get as much cow-clap up as possible. Cue jokes now about how much we must have left behind.
We were there in the west stand seats - I seem to remember we had a number of injuries but, against the odds, still beat them!
I was in Spain on a business trip and the morning after the Rotherham game I was desperate to hear the result. I was in a hotel in Zaragoza and a bloke walked into the foyer as I was walking out, with a Daily Mirror under his arm. So I asked him if it was today's and he said yes. I asked him if I could look at the footy scores and he asked me which game I was interested in so I said Barnsley. He said oh they won 1-0 and are promoted. He asked me where I was from so I told him and he lived less than a mile from my mum's house......
I was there, but don't expect me to remember anything. I can't remember what happened last week these days. As Havana mentioned, I do remember the Grimsby evening home game as being one of the most atmospheric. And I remember losing 3-4 to Exeter after being 3-0 up and kicking every stone and tin can on the street walking back to the station with my Dad.
I rung Radio Sheffield to take the piss. Robert Jackson wasn’t having any of that and cut me off. No sense of humour!
