Graham Mackrell the Safety Officer at Hillsborough when Liverpool and Forest met in the semi final of the Cup, was found guilty at Preston Crown Court last month. It was alleged that he had not made sure that sufficient turnstiles were open to cope with the number of Liverpool fans, who were trying to gain access to the Lepping Lane terraces. He admitted the offence and the sentence was announced at Preston Crown Court today. He was fined £5,500 and ordered to pay an additional £6,000 in costs. The Jury have failed to reach a verdict regarding the Match Commander David Duckinfield's actions on that awful day and the DPP has yet to decide whether or not he should face a re-trial. After their years of trying to get justice, I wonder how the families of the bereaved are feeling this evening.?
Doesn't bring anyone back. I'm sure those who made the fateful decisions will.have gone through the agony of guilt. Really hope theres no retrial.
Regarding duckenfield. The government will be waiting for him to die so that his family can keep his blood money
Still talking and trying to find answers about it 30 years later to me is totally unacceptable. Many survivors of the disaster and many relatives of those who died have themselves passed away not having seen justice being done.
Helen I really don't know and cannot answer that. But you only have to see the bitterness and disappointment being shown by the relatives of the victims over this. My own opinion of the fine handed out is more a slap in the face to the grieving relatives. 30 years have passed and a pointless fine handed out. Not sure that helped any.
No but as explained that was the penalty of the time. He made a serious error of judgement and as I ve said before has had to live with that. No one said how many turnstiles should have been opened? Having read about it , it seems a catalogue of errors .
I think the main things that the families and Liverpool FC are really hurt over are the slurs that were aimed at some supporters and the fact, that they allege that the Police were " liberal with the truth" around what happened that awful day, to the extent that some of the serving Police who were there, have since claimed that their statements were either altered or had parts removed. As for Mr Duckinfield, the previous Commander at Wednesday games was moved to one side to make way for him and claimed that he had warned his superiors, that Duckinfield did not have the required experience to manage such an event. Unfortunately he was ignored. The other big mistake, was to put the smaller number of Forest fans on the Kop , whilst allocating tickets for a much larger contingent of Liverpool fans for the much smaller Leppings Lane terrace. As we now sadly know, a combination of unfortunate errors, blind panic by the authorities and a lack of judgement, unfortunately caused the terrible tradegy that unfolded that day.
I believe RT that they allege that the Police in the form of Mr Duckinfield gave the order to open the large Gate that gave access to the terrace. He has denied he did that. Once that gate was opened , the supporters who had recently arrived poured on to the terrace with the result that some fell and were stepped on, whilst others were forced up against the fences that were in place behind each goal to stop fans running on to the pitch.
He admitted giving the order to open the gate at his trial and admitted saying at the time of the tragedy fans had forced the gate .
Surely the safety certificate and or police in consultation with swfc should specify how many turnstiles should be open. To pin it on one bloke is wrong.
You strike me as a really nice bloke, but as an aside, I have to skim 50% of your posts as it's just a wall of text- this is probably one of the shorter ones. Is there any chance you could break up into paragraphs?
At least he punctuates. I read something earlier on here, where the absence of a comma gave the sentence completely the opposite meaning.
