Tell me if the toss had been taken before the police came on to say it must be taken at the Charlton end? And if Doncaster got to choose whether to take penalties first or second?
The Sunderland forum is utterly brilliant on this. There’s not enough popcorn in the world to accompany my enjoyment of the myriad conspiracy theories about what went on last night. They’d really have preferred Donny in the final. Not sure why - on this week’s showings, either of last night’s sides would have ripped them to pieces.
Only thing I can think of is Donny were the only team in the top 6 to finish below them They’re both rubbish.
All this talk about pens at Charlton end, as far as I can remember, at Oakwell they have always been at Ponte End
Not according to them as they've kept 2 clean sheets. And the young Charlton players will get stage fright. Not really sure why they need bother with Wembley!
Memory might be failing, but I think the first penalty shoot out we were in, Lincoln in the league Cup, the penalties were at the other end. But as a rule, the penalties I've seen at Oakwell tend to be towards the Ponty, the penalties at away grounds at the home end.
It's all down to Karma or an Omen re- visited Micky. The 23rd May 1998 is indelibly marked in the mind of every Mackem. The Venue Wembley Stadium , the occasion, the Play off final to determine who would be promoted to the Premiership. One side with an array of " stars", the other a motley crew of hard working honest pros. After ninety minutes , the score stood at Charlton Athletic 3 Sunderland 3 and after extra time it finished 4 apiece. Journeyman ' Addicks forward Clive Mendonca scored a hat trick that day and Sunderlands " deadly duo " Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips also registered in normal time. The nightmare of penalties then began. The teams both scored their first six and then, local Sunderland hero Mickey Gray missed his kick, which meant that Charlton went up on penalties 7-6, having finished two points behind Sunderland, fourth in that seasons table. Mackems everywhere ( including my brother in law and nephew) are now bricking it, that twenty one years on, history could be set to repeat itself. He went in 1998 but is on a Cruise when this years tie takes place. After watching the game between Charlton and Donny last night, unless they can play better than they did against Pompey, I think Sunderland fans have every right to be really concerned about the outcome.
