Didn't even know the final was today and had no clue as to which teams made it to Wembley. Lost it's magic or is it just me?
Lost it long ago for me. The big clubs don't care about it, which, therefore, reduces the validity of giant killings. There's huge resistance, rightly, to the Checkatrade being insulted and devalued by Premier teams putting in youth teams yet we see the same sort of line ups being fielded in the FA Cup on a regular basis. I guess it will be on RTE this aft. I very much doubt I'll watch it.
I had completely forgotten until I saw this. Used to love watching it in the 80s/ 90s. It's not the same as what it used to be. I think money in the game and the huge emphasis on the champions league has devalued it somewhat.
Sanderson for me at the moment. And I have ten Steven Erikson books on the way. But I shall add Abercrombie to my list! Thank you!
I'm hoping they give the trilogy that starts, I think, with The Blade Itself the GOT treatment. Absolutely brilliant reads.
Give the winners the 4th Champion's League place, and watch the "magic" return when the big clubs take it more seriously...
I'll be having a break from Ken Burns' Civil War box set, to tune into this magical spectacle of sport.. Fort Sumpter just fell by the way... Battle of Bull Run just kicking off..
To be fair the BBC is trying harder this year. The golden years for me were the 1960s and 70s, when the coverage started in the morning. It had an "It's a Knockout " competition between rival fans, live broadcasts from the teams hotels and on the team's coaches, and the bloke in a white suit up a podium thing like airplane stairs, singing 'Abide with me'. It just seemed to deteriorate once ITV, Sky & BT wanted a share of it. It became too 'polished' and false. It lost what made it quintessentially British. It was an occasion. Now it's just another game of football.
I’m looking forward to it. Can guarantee Wolves and Watford fans will be feeling the magic of the cup today. Wolves preying for a city win to get into Europe. I’m not a massive fan of the 5 o’clock kick off tho. I think it should be 3 o’clock every time. Get the cameras on the team busses anorl
No interest. That might change if the FA offer a champions league spot to the best place club to not finish in the top three in the league. So because Man City are already in it next season Watford would already be in the CL regardless of what happens today instead of Spurs who finished 4th. But then if Spurs win the CL final Chelsea in third would have to miss out.
I've got the same set Mr C. It's fantastic. Never tire of watching it. I've also got a book by James M. McPherson titled " Battle Cry of Freedom- the American Civil War." I agree with the reviewers when they say it's probably the best one volume account of the subject. I've also got the CD by Jay Ungar and the Molly Mason Family Band which contains the background musical theme on the Ken Burns boxed set, " Ashokan Farewell ". Absolutely Haunting.? On the subject of the FA Cup, it still holds the same magic for me as it did when I was a kid, but agree, at times it has been spoiled by altering kick off times to suit the TV schedules , but the season 1999-2000 when Manchester United saw fit to not take part in it , because they deemed that the money spinning FIFA World Club Championships were more important, was a disgrace. For me, they should have been banned from competing in it for a couple of years, if only to set an example to other Clubs who might see fit to ride roughshod over their commitment to our domestic competitions. Probably the first time ever, that the Cup holders failed to defend the trophy the following year. https://www.google.co.uk/search?sou.....0..0i131j46i131j46i131i275j0i10.h4vD0qRINZc
I believe it has lost it's magic although in recent seasons it's slowly returning. Award 4th Spot to winners would sure encourage it. I must admit I preferred the old days when you'd wake up and watch the full days proceedings.
The kick off time has killed it off for me. I get time off for good behaviour on Saturday afternoons not Saturday evenings. The spectacle isn't the same either. Live football is commonplace now, whereas in the 1970s and 1980s it was a rarity. The whole day's TV coverage used to be devoted to it, with special FA Cup versions of regular programmes.
I know what you mean. Beautiful and iconic stadium that it was, unfortunately it was not remotely fit for purpose. Having said that, the way they redeveloped the Luzhniki in Moscow for the World Cup, preserving the historic exterior while completely modernising the seating areas and facilities is extremely impressive. I think that the new Wembley is a tremendous stadium, but it's definitely not quite the same.
And when an none league club wins it - still award them the spot. I think so - but watch the Liverpool fans winge then when they think they deserve to be in it more than a first division club.
