Soccer AM (@SoccerAM) Tweeted: Pure savagery from Mick McCarthy after being asked about Chris Hughton’s Brighton departure: ️ "Well, perhaps they needed a change. A bit like Ipswich getting rid of me. They needed a change..." *LONG PAUSE* ️"That went well!" https://t.co/Y54pHQ2MhS
Bet the board and fans at Ipswich regret forcing Mick out it wasn’t the best brand of football to watch but he got results
Yes,have to agree with that. He always did have an edge but lately it seems to have tipped over into something a bit more bitter
I wouldn't say bitter as such. Both him and the Brighton manager didnt deserve the sack imo and in Ipswich case they finished worse. They knew his brand of football when they appointed him in the first place.
It’s not the first time he’s had a dig. Loads of managers get the sack deservedly or not. You rarely hear them having a swipe at the club, especially over a year later. Let it go Mick
It's hard to let things go though. I'm less bitter now than I was but I'm only ready to forgive Hecky that winless run at this juncture because we're back in the Championship.
I think it’s more than just the fact that they were relegated so much as the manner of it. If they they had just slipped through the net on the last day he possibly would have held it back, but they were hopeless pretty much from the first game and were propping up the league all season. All but the most optimistic Ipswich fans would have known that they were doomed by the end of September.
It's how I felt after first international break during the 13/14 season. I knew Flitcroft hadn't got a clue and was taking us down.
Had a quick look on the Ipswich forum and let's just say they are not too happy with Mick's latest comments. He did a great job there, but after six years or so things had obviously gone stale. It seems he was meeting his remit but perhaps at the sacrifice of the product on the pitch . Marcus Evans has been cutting the playing budget every season for the last few years so it's not surprise they were going to have a real struggle at some point. In all honesty, relegation may not be a bad thing for Ipswich, they can clear the decks and start again, looks like they are possibly going to try a similar route to us in bringing in young hungry players to play a certain system.
He’s right to mention it. The Ipswich fans were a disgrace towards him. Took all their anger out at the wrong bloke. Evans gave Keane fortunes but kept cutting the budget year after year & Mick took the brunt of the criticism rather than the owner
Well, folks from Barnsley do have a history and reputation for holding onto the past and not letting things go, so you could well be onto something.
They wanted a change, it did not go well, so he's right. He was asked about Brighton sacking Houghton, so I would say it was also a relevant point.
Good on Mick. Ipswich fans gave him a lot of abuse considering the job he was doing with a limited budget. Wish there were more characters in the game who were willing to speak their mind. Good manager with excellent comic timing.
