I think there is an argument that the policy should be different for a keeper. I’m fully supportive in the policy in general and think it works for outfield players. I can’t be bothered to trawl through the figures but anecdotally I think goalkeepers don’t have as much as a resale value as outfield players and I also think that keepers tend to come into their prime at a later stage of their careers. I must say I am quite apprehensive at bringing in a relatively untested young lad into the championship, when there doesn’t seem much rationale or purpose in doing so save for it being just to rigidly stick to ‘our policy’ .. I’m also not too convinced the algorithm is well tested given it picked Townsend up..
Agreed I should further add that it’s a critical position - a really good keeper can often add another 10-15 points a season
I think it's a valid point. Particularly considering keepers also tend to have longer careers. So you could still get resale value when buying a keeper around 28.
I just wonder if part of letting Davies leave (if they do /if he does) is as much to do with wanting Walton to have game time? To bring players through and increase their value to sell on they need to be playing, so I wonder if the plan is to let Walton stake his claim? He did well when called on and maybe is putting good appearances in weekly in the reserves?
We signed Nick Townsend on the recommendation of our goalkeeper coach, John Vaughan. Adam Davies was also signed on recommendation.
I don't think the club have a say in the matter. He's been offered a deal but if his head has been turned by others he'll leave simple as that.
Talk in the Midlands seems to suggest that Stoke City are hoping to recruit Davies once they sell Jack Butland. They are hoping he will be sold by the end of this month. Also looks very likely that they will also be signing Lee Gregory from Millwall as well. His contract is up in June, so like Davies, he will be joining Stoke on a free transfer. Apparently City boss Nathan Jones rates both players very highly.
I know what you’re saying, but if we are forced to replace Davies who’s to say we won’t sign a 23/24 year old with nearly 150 first team appearances under their belt? We sometimes get side tracked on age when experience to us is games played - even if it isn’t games played at Championship level. A keeper with three full seasons of first team football shouldn’t be regarded as an untested young lad, just one that we’re hoping/confident will step up. Doesn’t matter to me whether they’re 24 and experiencing the Championship for the first time or 29. The step up is still the same. Ward went to Leicester for £10 million and didn’t Gunn sign for Southampton for crazy money too? Plus Pickford, Butland, etc. Money is there for goalkeepers so I say we follow the same path as we do with all recruits.
I'd give Walton the gig next season just for his performance against Walsall alone. Played the sweeper, keeper brilliantly that day.
Your head can be turned by many things. Money is a pretty big one though. Stoke could put him on 20k a week, or more. We cannot offer that. It is pretty simple.
Yes, would have thought it wouldn’t have been allowed to run down, and would maybe have been offered one last year or beginning of season if he was wanted to continue as first team keeper. That’s not necessarily a criticism, I’m just wondering if the staff within the club think Walton is a good prospect and has a future they will need him playing first team football, so it’s just the natural course of things.
