EU Elections

I still don't understand why/how anyone would vote for a party who will literally not even show up to represent you. Literally will do absolutely nothing but make the country worse off, just to blame the EU for making the country worse off. Literally get paid to do nothing, at your expense. Literally sit at home in the South of France, making your life worse.

Or am I missing something?

 

Christ, which bit don’t you understand? The Brexit Party called themselves, er...The Brexit Party. They put up candidates everywhere, campaigning on one, single issue, which wasn’t hard to work out, given their name. No policies on how that would work, nor on anything else. Change UK, in contrast, had I think three names in their short life. They didn’t field candidates everywhere. You and I might know they were a pro-remain / 2nd referendum party, but the name gave nothing away to those who don’t follow such things. Change? Change what?? Your pants??

The two are simply incomparable.

A worrying lack of ability to think critically, and Farage feeds off this vulnerability. So many people are apathetic and don't have the time or inclination to look into things for themselves. They just accept something as fact because it affirms their world view.

Farage has got Tories and Labour by the short and curlies.

The only way to stop him and his party in their tracks is to get a Leave vote through Parliament as soon as possible.

Whilst I fully understand your frustration being labelled like that - frankly, some of the comments regarding both extremes are wholly offensive on this forum. I’ve seen the phrase ‘racist’ and ‘thick’ being overused several times for those people who voted to leave. Appalling! The majority of fans on this site thankfully have a proper sense of decorum and ignore that kind of senseless claptrap!

I'm sorry scoff, I really have to disagree and wouldn't want to stand by and watch the part Britain played in ww2 being down played to try and win an argument on brexit. You can't count the contribution on numbers killed. China, (since the mid thirties) Poland and Russia suffered horrendous occupations and many civilians died. whilst you can say that without Russia and America we wouldn't have won the war, but you could also make a case that neither Russia or America would have been capable of winning that war on their own. Had we not defended our shores then D-Day, would not have been possible with Air marshal tedder being eisenhower's deputy as he commanded the respect of both airforces. We did the heavy lifting in the battle of the Atlantic, the strategic bombing campaign, arctic convoys etc. Add in our almost complete intelligence war victory and our near total command of the European naval surface war. Consider that in 1943 Stalin was begging Britain and America to establish a second front in Europe to take the pressure off them fighting the Nazis. Add in that bletchley park provided vital intelligence in the pivotal battle of Kursk in 1943 and that Hitler had to delay the citadel offensive because of allied bombing disruption to his tank production.
Some of what we did isn't very well known for example the largest naval task force this country as ever assembled was in the Pacific in 1945 when our aircraft carrier group stood point for the American fleet because our aircraft carriers had reinforced and armoured flight decks which the Americans didn't meaning ours could better cope with direct kamikaze hits. Perhaps of equal significance we gave reguge to Jewish nuclear physicists such as Otto Frisch who went on to play a key role in the Manhatten project. Speer reckoned the Germans could have had the bomb by 1947, if we had capitulated, you only needed 18 months more of war and then who knows as the Germans had a rocket programme.

And as part of the preparations the ECB made a soft loan to ford to build a transit factory in Turkey. When it was finished ford switched production to turkey, causing job losses in Southampton, but hey, you've got to have something to show for the billions we send to the EU every year

 

Echoing what I'd said earlier, radio two's debate this lunchtime had a professor of politics on as an expert. He described trying to read into this as indicator of the potential referendum result as "folly".

 

I looked in a dictionary today, looking up the word 'farage'

farage (verb) to farage - as in to sponge off an entity of which one is diametrically opposite. ie taking a salary or pension or both whilst attending infrequently
farage (noun) as in a farage, a class of person claiming to be someone they are not: ie a man of the working class

 

I sat up to watch the EU results coming in on the BBC last week. One of the guests on the panel was
Tony Blairs former spin doctor Alastair Campbell. I knew he was a lifelong Labour Party supporter and so
I was rather surprised to hear him declare that in the EU elections, he had decided to vote for the Liberal
Democratic Party for the first time in his life.

Seen a tweet this morning announcing his disappointment after receiving an e-mail from someone at the
Labour Party, informing him that that his membership of the party has now been revoked.

After his admission on the EU programme the other night, I have say that I am surprised at his surprise.
The danger is of course, they setting a precedent that by making an example of him, there are other card carrying
Labour Party members who probably did the same, but haven't as yet, had their membership cancelled.

 

It was a bit 'Roy Keane' of Alastair to go ahead and announce how he'd voted. Like you, I think the outcome was predictable. Interesting to see whether the moderate Labour MP's react or whether they continue to preserve their meal tickets by keeping quiet. Would be fun to see a leadership contest in both major parties at the same time!

 

A sudden fit of honesty from the man who helped bring us the dodgy dossier and the Iraq war, allegedly. Quelle surprise.

 

Just spotted a comment from Owen Jones. Didn't realise that it's a rule of the party viz: vote for
another and your membership is automatically cancelled and you are expelled.
Heseltine has apparently done the same and has also been expelled from the Conservative party.
