The local Stoke newspaper is expecting it to be confirmed this week along with Lee Gregory and Nick Powell...... https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-transfer-news-whelan-2933535
Think it's pretty obvious that he's played his last game for us unfortunately so it's thank you good luck and we move on .Got every confidence we will be fine
I wish him well, he has done a good job for us and I hope he has further success with Stoke and Wales. That said I am not unduly concerned at finding a replacement. I'm not saying goalkeepers are "10 a penny" ( Burnley have 3 internationals) but there are many very good keepers at Championship and EFL 1&2 clubs. When you think Chelsea paid £71.6 million for Arrizabelaga (world record), he's not the best in the world, he's not even the best at Chelsea. Has anybody seen him catch a cross? Barnsley could do a lot worse than get Jon McLaughlin from Sunderland. He'd be £71 million cheaper than Arrizabelaga and he's a better goalie.
To be honest I couldn't care less. He cost us nothing and we won't get anything for him. We saw plenty of good keepers playing against us last season who hadn't the benefit of our back four in front of them. 2 a penny goalkeepers.
Don't think Liverpool would agree with that if you compare their keepers performances in last two champion league finals
Without Davies we wouldnt have got promoted in my opinion. Most important position on the pitch, certainly next season.
Just as important as a prolific striker - when Davis lost confidence last season it almost certainly cost us the relegation. When he got his mojo back he made performances that were almost certainly the difference between automatic and just a playoff place We cant take too big a risk with the replacement. I think Walton is fine for the back up keeper but we need someone who we know will do a good job for us next season - For sure the Sunderland keeper would be good but I cant see that happening - less convinced about the guy from Oxford. I expect we will have been looking hard for the second half of the season and have someone lined up - just hope he turns into another Muller
We gave him his chance in first team professional football and the lad repaid us with a bit of loyalty . I don't think he's top half championship standard but fair play and good luck to him on the 3 year contract . Careful of the splinters Adam .
Could be right Plobby. Nathan Jones didn't probably achieve as much as the Board expected of him last season. For a former Premiership Club with the resources at their disposal re- 16th on 55 points must have been a big disappointment as far as they were concerned. Jones was brought in during January 2019 to succeed Gary Rowett who was sacked after a brief 8 months in charge, when the Club were in 14th place in the table. In all probability they might wait to see where they are in December, before deciding if Jones really is the man to get them back to where they believe they belong, re-the Premiership. If Davies is first choice and they don't do well and Jones is ultimately fired, there's nothing to say that any new Manager might look to bring a new keeper in to arrest their slide and as you imply, AD could easily end up warming the bench, which wouldn't do much to improve his future ambitions of being first choice keeper for Wales. Be interesting to see the kind of reception he gets when he returns to plays against us. Could unnerve him to such an extent, he might make a rick similar to the one he made when he gifted Sammy the Snake a goal when he returned with Wednesday.
I wish him all the best. He was key in getting us promoted. Wish he was still with us, but they have a bigger budget & he has a great chance there.
You're joking right? He was streets ahead of most keepers in league one last season. Good keepers are a major attribute for any team. Agree. Vitally important position and without him I think we'd have been in the playoffs.
I suppose it was a bit easier for Davies in League 1. And thus he showed a bit of class. His troubled anticipation, when it comes to sweeping or cross collecting, will forever be his cross to bear. Otherwise last season he was solid as a rock.
Keepers develop slower than other positions reaching their peak later in their careers - Davies is only going to get better. He's probably not going to be premier league quality but he's going to be a good, reliable championship keeper in my opinion. He showed potential during our first season in the championship under Hecky.
