We are staying at my wife's sister's house in Mexico. I was advised not to go bare foot in the house as there are some bugs that its not advisable to stand on. The Spanish name was mentioned but it didn't sound familiar. They have these glue matts in each room which have some sent to catch them. One outside our bedroom was successful last night I have been risking it barefoot going to the loo in the morning. Might be a bit more careful going forward
So you now know what el alacrán means then - I assume they didnt say el escorpión or you might have twigged
Scorpion alert wow... Sends shudders down my spine... A few years ago I was holidaying in Brasil and was talking to the guy on reception.. Somehow the conversation got round to bugs etc he casually mentioned in conversation the gardens were sprayed regularly since a hotel guest had died from a scorpion sting a few years before my visit and they now prided themselves on one of the few hotels in the region to spray... Fast forward 2 days im outside leaning on the wall which was just above waist height with my hand partially on the wall partially on the grass that was behind me... Talking to the same guy when he suddenly just hit me on my shoulder/ neck with his news paper then grabbed me by the shirt and yanked me forward... Yep scorpion on my shoulder and two of the little buggers side of my arm and one actually about to strike my hand.. Lucky escape... Fair play to the hotel within 20 mins 1/2 a dozen blokes there spraying chemicals about...
I made the mistake of googling about them in Mexico so that hasn't helped with the worry especially with a 4 year old running around the place. I had been told that a sting means a trip to the hospital for a shot. Seems quite a few die from adverse reactions in fact they are the biggest killer of allergic reactions in Mexico and there are approximateky 250k stings a year
I was just going to say that scorpion fatalities are very rarely due to the venom itself. So as long as you're not allergic to scorpions, you're likely to be fine. And as I don't know anyone who is allergic to scorpions, I reckon it must be a pretty rare allergy!
How do you know if you are allergic to scorpions though - I have no idea if I am or not. I know I am not allergic to wasp stings though
If you live in Yorkshire, you probably don't! However with global warming, they'll probably be inhabiting your neck of the woods before long!
They like hard or dry objects to hide under, so if they managed to crawl through Donald Trump's ear into his brain, I'm sure they'd feel right at home.
I don't want to worry you but they have been amongst us for a while http://www.bbc.co.uk/kent/content/articles/2009/07/09/scorpion_sheerness_video_feature.shtml Or the Scums take on them....slightly more scaremongering https://www.thesun.co.uk/archives/news/214656/cannibal-scorpions-spreading-across-uk/
