If you look at the last two seasons Stones started both as first choice & stayed in the team until getting injured. In 17/18 when he got back fit they’d signed Laporte in January & he’d come in & done well so Stones couldn’t get back in. This time round he was first choice up until Christmas time when he got injured again & then Kompany came in & did well & Kompany kept his place. Pep’s very loyal to players who are in the team & doing well. Like when Mendy got back fit but he kept playing Zinchenko as he’d done well or like when Fernandinho got back fit but Gundogan kept his position. I think Stones will start next season as Pep’s first choice for the 4th season running but if he gets injured he’ll struggle to get back in because they’ve got that much quality
I think Stones is being made a scapegoat here. Gary Neville thinks he needs to toughen up. There were players further up the field that weren't doing their jobs either.
From watching that the main difference between the 2 games was the quality of the opposition I’d say there was just as much poor ball retention, giving the ball away and poor passes out from the back as the other night. Midfield and forwards not showing quickly enough for the ball.
