Yes I know, but if we keep the contract on the table like it was suggested, pending Stoke's decision to sign Davies, we might lose out on potential replacements. We're not going to have 2 keepers on first choice keeper wagers. For me I think we should move on quickly, we know what his choice is.
Technically contract ends at end of this month(July), but I think that’s just a formality as can’t see a benefit for either party to have to hang on until then.
If he's that good, this replacement, it won't hurt to have two experienced keepers. They'll provide competition and both be saleable assets. The silly season rumour mill is linking us with players of value we're not used to. I think we can afford two keepers. Maybe we'll sell one of them next year for 10 million.
We pay him till the end of this month, then that's it. From the 1st of next month he'll have to find another club.. or sign back on here. Or become a free agent
Can't agree. Our "live within our means" policy probably means [my guess] that 8-10K pw is the max we'd offer even a vital player at Oakwell. Two years ago we were being picked off with (reportedly) 16-18K pw for Winnall; 28K pw for Conor. Any player who shows promise is fair game. The best we can hope for is that the new recruits to the coaching system are fished from a higher pool and that they develop and perform for us within the shorter term. Once they mature they will be on their way. We can slowly rise on this model, but it heavily depends on the incoming prospects coming up to expectations.
I think the promote from the academy model allows you to have a Brown or Williams on tuppence a week and pay a Mowatt or Mcgeehan a pound a week. I think it would be robbing Peter to pay Paul but achievable nontheless.
My thoughts exactly. In theory and reading between the lines, it’s an exciting chapter unfolding at oakwell at the moment. Stability behind the scenes and you get the real sense that the board will do what it takes to aim at another promotion push in a few year. If I was one of those young players, I’d stick around to see where they take us Unless it’s all smoke screens and there’s more going off behind the scenes than we’re lead to believe. Let’s just hope that this time round we don’t go down the route of nice football club
We could be allowing Davies to run his contract down. Still our player at mo. (June 30th) so commands a fee till then. Replacement ready to sign July 1st. Leaving Davies without a club if stoke manage to hang onto Butland. Darren Barnard played that dangerous game. Joined Grimsby on 10% of what Barnsley were paying him at the time. September into the new season. No other offers came to him.
We're still in June. I'd give him until the end of June to make his mind up. If we can pers6him to stay then its great news, if not we pursue other targets.
Disagree. Players are not badly paid so if a decision is about money then for me it should be a case of sithi then. Two types of player, first one either like it here and want to play for the club or second type are motivated by money and prepared to go sit on a subs bench. I want to see the first type pulling on the shirt. It isn't the same as an everyday job nowadays in football. Players are highly paid for what they do not offered scraps, especially with a championship uplift following promotion.
I've got some bad news for you. It's probably been 10 years since we had a single player that wants to be here out of love, nothing about money.
If he signs a new deal we could be stuck with a keeper who's just here to pick up his wages and will be harder to move on as he'll then command a Transfer Fee so other clubs will be less interested!
Do you think other players are here out of the good of their heart, because they love Barnsley so much?
Good thinking Mr Kaht. We will have to see what the board do in this window and draw conclusions from both the initial outlay and the reported wages
