Wouldn’t have even made the play offs never mind go up and that’s an absolute fact. The club would however had no money at all to spend in the summer and required 8 new players.

All this did he or did he not sign players argument makes me laugh... Hasn't it been stated often enough he hecky did have the final say on who signed... The trouble was, what wasn't made clear, by the club was that they presented him with a choice of either player A B or C and in some cases player A or the fat lad to choose from.. I dont think once did he say I want such and such player and the club went OK and got him
This debate will run and run...

He stock piled number 10's and played with two holding midfielders as he "didn't believe in number 10's". His rationale has to be questioned a little.

That same logic could and should be leveled at the club, they were the ones highlighting the players and telling hecky he had to choose either the fat kid or not

He chose the fat kid in Thiam and didn't play him because he "wasn't match fit yet and needed to adjust to the pace of English football". How is that possible if you aren't playing?

People seem to think Hecky was above criticism. Yet I don't. I don't like retorting to tit for tat posting but will flag up areas. I think Hecky has and will divide opinions for years to come.

Whoever watched Barnsley through the 16/17 season and then the first half of the 17/18 season and comes to the conclusion that Hecky
is a bad manager does NOT understand football.

It’s like saying - Mill Reef was a poor racehorse - because how many races did he win after his leg was broken?

    Was it walking a tightrope?

Are you asking - did that racehorse break it’s leg while walking along then falling off a tightrope?
    I don’t know.
But I’d guess at - no.

Makes me laugh too. Like it was confirmed a few weeelk back when he took one of his old signings in Adam Jackson to hibs he scouted Jacksons intensively while he was at boro on loan at hartlepool he had the final say and had more input than people want others to belive.

Yer right - the club hasn’t really described in detail how the recruitment works.
But however it works it’s a brilliant system.

IMO the manager/head coach should always have the last word on who is brought in.
With the sound of it (Heckys Radio Sheffield interviews) and my discussion with Hecky, this was one of the principal reasons he felt he could no longer stay at the club.

Nothing to do with Leeds being a bigger club and paying more?

I still don’t understand why people on here pretend that he had loads of say or none at all when in reality none of us know. We’ve all heard conflicting reports from managers, chief exec’s, Cryne etc.

I don’t praise him for good signings & I don’t criticise him for bad ones because I don’t know how much of a say he had in any of them.

I think it’s hard to judge any modern manager on recruitment anyway because there’s so many Ed Woodward types in the game having more input on signings than they should.

Judge managers on tactics, selections, subs etc don’t judge them on stuff you’re guessing about or stuff you’re pretending to know about

    Not according to Hecky.
As I’ve said - he told Ganaye weeks before he left that the next club to enquire about him he was going.
He had such a bad reputation that
    Sunderland
    Notts Forest (twice)
    Another club (Swansea?)
    Leeds
    All came in for him
    :)

He jumped ship because of the turmoil inside Barnsley - NOT because he wanted to join Leeds or another club.
His heart is at Barnsley FFS !!!

I was on Radio Sheffield Football Heaven for 4 consecutive evenings at that time asking them to find out what had happened.
All they said - Leeds are a bigger club that’s why he’s joined them.
    Lazy journalists.
I knew that wasn’t the case - I have been proved right.

I’m only speculating here but I honestly believe that Leeds coming in for Hecky did our owners a huge favour, I think they would have probably wanted to sack him but didn’t want to upset the fans with him being a one of our own, I’ve no problems with him, it’s all turned out for the best.

On a side note, I know for a fact that he’s always talked very open and honest to fans which I did find surprising.

In fairness in a recent interview he said he had decided next club and he was gone and it happened to be Leeds

I wouldn’t have him back. If he wasn’t “one of our own” he wouldn’t have been put on the pedestal he has by some people.

LJ may not have been everybody’s cup of tea but he started the turn around (6 wins on the spin in the league + getting us past fleetwood in the JPT) and people seem to forget that and hold Hecky up as some sort of Demi god. Once LJ’s players started leaving Hecky seemed lost

It’s only my opinion, and I was as gutted as the next man when he jumped ship to Leeds, but him leaving was the best thing that’s happened in ages. Stendel came along, gave us one of the best seasons we’ve had in ages and I hope he stays here for a very long time. Hecky has to be praised for what he did in carrying on LJs work and the first half of the championship season. But to have him back would be a massive step back for this club

Speaking with my nephew recently, who works for Celtic, Hecky is well liked and popular with the fans and considered one of the best and astute coaches north of the border.

The thing is over his time here there was giveaways that he had alot of say. He told radio Sheffield he had watched ugbo for Chelseas u23s and believed he could make the step up, when he left to go to Leeds he said one of the reasons for joining was he wouldn't have to go scout players and he could just coach, he then took Adam Jackson to hibs and it was revealed by hibs hecky scouted Jackson intensively before signing him for barnsley.

As for tactics hecky took over a side on a 7 game winning run was it? A side that were already in the jpt final. The side he had was a great one for league one it had just been poorly managed for the 1st half of the season. 2 players in that squad have gone on to be premier league players 3 if brownhill joins the blades.
He didn't have to change anything formation wise he kept the 442 Johnson was forced into playing. We got promoted and did well untill 3 players left winnall bree and most important Conor. After that the rest of the season we went 451. The season after we continued to play 451 with tiny tom Bradshaw the pinnicle of our attacks. Playing players out of position (mowatt, moncur, thiam) over looking other players (pinnock, mowatt)

He seems a decent lad mind and glad he is doing okay now after a poor spell at us and leeds. I hope he has a good career but wouldn't like to see him back here again as manager.

Would have been happy to see Hecky stay. I backed him throughout.

    Good coach liked by players.

Needs a thicker skin re owners...was his Leeds experience any better? But understand and share his frustration with with the bleak midwinter sales of Winnall et al. Unlike him I paid for the privilege of watching that dismantling job.

Different manager after we lost to Cardiff...was he protecting his CV? Too defensive and cut a dour figure.

Grates with me that he decided to jump ship come what may. It may be irrational, but I almost find that personally offensive as a fan. His love for Barnsley did not extend to leaving us in decent shape as he gutted the coaching staff.

But it was his first mangerial job.

And just as l hope we have learnt a lesson, he needs to too.
