Not sure in the main people are saying he’s no good. But we have seen better. In one of your other posts you stated you’ve seen few better. I don’t know how far you go back. I’ve seen lots better. But in saying that, it’s a position where we’ve been blessed. As for comparisons you cannot compare say Paul Futcher with Mick McCarthy. Mawson with Morgan. De Zeeuw with Larry May. Taggart with Chettle ( the list goes on ) In my honest opinion even John Saunders and Eric Winstanley (who played at league 3/4 level for us ) were better than Lindsay. Not glad he’s gone/ going, but won’t lose any sleep on that one. But if I’d to pick 2 for my best 11. It would be first 2 mentioned.

The issue will always be wages as opposed to fees in or out- we are buying lower league players and so therefore paying an appropriate wage. Under the current system I can’t see us ever being able to keep any player that ‘works out’. If they become ‘worth’ upwards of 1-2million then that value correlates to a wage demand. Other teams will pay more than us. Yes we can perhaps afford to forego the fee in some instances a la Davies, but we won’t break the wage structure - so they will leave as soon as they can.

It like the lad from Motherwell, if he is that good then £3 million could be a decent price worth paying as if he is going to be worth £4 million in 2-3 years you’ve still made the profit. Issue is a £3 million player wants high wages, reported he’s turned down £10k at Celtic, were never going to pay it. If the fee was £3 million but he only wanted £4K perhaps we would go for it? So in essence the fees are secondary, it’s the wages that determine who we buy and who we sell and when

Unless we are more competitive on wages we are destined to come down again and in short order. Sort of comes back to the issue what the owners want and why they are here.

Which is I guess why they are keen to increase the turnover and profit, the more the club makes the higher they can push the wage structure.

Good luck to the lad, I hope he does well and get into the Scotland team. We have to question the wisdom of letting Jackson go.

We aren't competitive enough to compete with stoke who are still reciving parachute payments I know that. I also heard Lindsay wouldn't speak to the club about a new contract.

Didn't Jackson refuse a contract extension?

To go back to my point - the kind of profits the owners can make at Barnsley (without being in the Prem) operating on its present basis are paltry compared with what their other business interests probably generate and with significantly less downside risk. So what is their motivation? Just to have a seat at the table should Championship TV rights go through the roof? A play thing? A challenge? I've no probs with Chien Lee and Conway at all - I'm pleased they are here - but I'm still baffled, especially if we continue to operate at this level re wages (accepting FFP is a limiting factor). If we can't compete with the likes of Preston I suspect we are doomed.

They bought us cheap. Steady growth over the years using Income they generate from the club (reinvesting)

Makes for an eye watering sale aka 'Nice' in later years.

Is my guess anyway. Unless we reach the dizzy heights they may keep hold longer....

Interesting times ahead that's for sure

Good point, What I can't get mi head around is some of these players want a high wage BEFORE they step up and prove that they are of a better quality, effectively paying Championship pay to a player who hasn't been in the Championship is an enormous gamble. but sadly it's now the way it is and other clubs are willing to pay it which is why too many clubs end up wrecked and paying players who dunt play and can't get in the team

What did we offer him to stay and how much will a replacement cost us.

I haven't a clue. I'm not privy to what our players get paid.

His replacement won't cost us much because we don't pay much for players.

I think we'll get better than Jackson who compared with other recent centre halves has gone out of the back door very quietly.
