    Was that the season that fans were waving pound notes at Clarke in protest when we sold Beresford for about £300k and Hirst for even less?

    I'd just found out we were going to have our first child, after being told earlier in the year we couldn't have children, so I was somewhat laid back. Being the daft bugger I am, I still kept the faith even after we'd lost our first six league matches.:D

    Beresford was sold to Portsmouth in the Spring of 1989, for a fee of £300,000. Ironically, he came to the club from Manchester City a few weeks prior to the exodus of our strikers during the 1986 close season
    Hirst was sold for £200,000.

    First point was a home draw against Plymouth wasn't it, in the 7th game. Seems like a lifetime ago.

    Yup. Jim Dobbin made his debut that game. We won our first game of the season in the next match when we triumphed 1-0 at Grimsby.

    Was Beresford " sacrificed" to help pay for the new floodlights Big Lil, or was that Mark Robinson?
    Always remember Beresford was a controversial sale as far as our fans were concerned and was not very well recieved.

    As for David Hirst, when we first moved over this way ,I was given two free tickets to go and see the
    Wendies play Arsenal at Hillsborough. Hirsty had an absolute blinder and scored one of their goals in a 2-0 win.
    Didn't realise until I started supporting the Reds, that he'd actually started out with us.

    Seem to remember, he came back to Oakwell but I can't recall if it was with Wednesday or Southampton. His best years seemed to be behind him. Didn't he do a "swan dive" in the area at the Ponte Road End and our crowd let him know they were far from impressed.? He'd put on a lot of weight and nearly rocked himself to sleep in his attempts to get himself up off the deck.

    Stuart Gray was a fantastic player ...always had plenty of time on the ball...a sign of class.
    Dunno how true tho but I was told Villa came sniffing round and wanted to see him play in different positions before they signed him....we did do that,as he could play anywhere and look good but like I say not sure if was because villa asked us to do so!

    I have Ian Walsh's shirt from that team. Given to me two days after the Oxford defeat, last match. It's a tad tight these days :)

    Thought that was right mate. Someone wrote into the Chronicle once, complaining about selling our best
    players citing " the Beresford lights", " the Agnew, Tiler East Stand" and the " Ashley Ward, Craig Hignett
    North Stand and all weather indoor training facility." All possibly true, but given our lack of financial resources
    at those various times, something that had to be done.

    Well, the money has to come from somewhere and for Barnsley (along with most clubs) historically that has tended to be found by transfers.

    The team in the picture was the first season I ever attended - my first ever game was the first home match of that season in August 1985, we beat Charlton 2-1. I was six.
