54 today. He's a member of my All Time Favourites Barnsley XI. I'm sure that's the highlught of his career(!)
When I was doing it, I simply selected players who were a favourite of mine when they played. The success of the Barnsley team at that time didn't influence me. My biggest issue was who to select as central defenders, we've had so many quality players in that particular position. It's worth pointing out that this isn't a Best Ever XI, just my personal favourites. In the end, I chose this team as my All Time Favourite Barnsley XI:- 1.Heinz Muller 2.Neil Cooper 3.David Booth 4.Ronnie Glavin 5.Mick McCarthy 6.Pat Howard 7.Mick Butler 8.Craig Hignett 9.Ashley Ward 10.Neil Redfearn 11.Conor Hourihane
Best ever for me. Hopefully won't be the only person to captain us to the Premier League for much longer.
Agree with 1,4,5,8,9,10,11 I'd be agonising over Ian Evans, Paul Futcher, Brian Joicey, David Currie, Ian Banks, Trev. I'd put Darren Barnard in at left back. John Hendrie too. It's a nightmare task!
Ah, but it's not up for debate, old friend. It's very much a personal choice of who is a favourite player, or not. There is no right or wrong All Time Favourites Barnsley XI. I may have selected players who others wouldn't even consider, that's fair enough if someone disagrees. But it's MY XI, others can select whoever they like for theirs. As well as the two central defenders you mentioned, I was also a great fan of Eric Winstanley, Larry May, Stuart Gray, Mark Smith, Gerry Taggart, Gary Fleming (more of a sweeper), Steve Davis, Arjan De Zeeuw.
Sad thing for me Lil, I have only seen five of your list don the famous Red shirt ( Muller, Hignett, Ward, Redders and Hourihane) .My workmate used to go all misty eyed talking about his hero, Ronnie Glavin. Must have been one of if not the best player we've ever had.? Wished I had seen him play. Still convinced to this day, if we'd have had Ashley Ward leading the line in the play off final against Ipswich, we could well have won.
For me, Ronnie Glavin is the best player I've ever seen in a Barnsley shirt. No one else comes close.
Re Gary Fleming. For me absolutely born for the role. To be honest lil I'd struggle to name either my favorite or best 11. So many to choose from.
Strong. Wouldn't be mine, as Booth & Howard were before my time.Remember Mick Butler. I used to have the cutting from the Daily Mirror, showing all his injuries.
A midfield of Glavin, Hignett, Redfearn and Hourihane would be fantastic (except for the fighting over who took the free kicks) but what about wide midfielders or wingers? I can’t think of many great ones. Devaney was a lovely crosser of a ball and Stewart Barrowclough was good enough for the top division, but who else?
A very good question, which unfortunately I can't find an answer to. Edit. I've given it a bit more thought and as well as the two you've already mentioned, I'd put forward Bob Earnshaw, George Hamstead, Frank Sharp, Alan Birch & Paddy McCourt as wingers who were particular favourites of mine when they played. Again, not claiming that they were the most talented, but they were personal favourites.
I didn’t see most of them but had forgotten Birch. That reminded me of Gordon Owen and Ricardo Vaz Te. Think I’ll stick with your four and play them in a diamond.
That Hammill bloke was decent out wide, weren't he? Not saying he'd make my favourite XI, but surprised nobody's mentioned him.
