tv program caught red handed is on at 11-45 this morning and it catches the moment a garden gnome is taken from a garden, surely such chilling tv should be on after the watershed

It's might sound trivial to you, but a stranger coming into your garden and lifting your gnome is an incredibly traumatic experience.

Personally, I'm a garden gnome theft survivor and without the help of my support group I dread to think where I'd be now.

I’ve never thought of it like that, I’ve always assumed (admittedly probably wrongly) that if I got one, then I’d have to build him a fish pond then I would have to put fish in it and it would all get too costly.

No, they're fairly industrious, they can create a decent sized pond themselves in a few hours under the right conditions. They can also fashion their own rods if you place them close to a woody bush or tree (hawthorn is perfect). You would need to provide the fish though.

As a student, I spent a year in Abingdon. Between our house and the town centre was a convent/Catholic School. One night a friend* jumped over the wall and stole an ornament from the garden - some kind of religious gnome figurine (this was the early 90s) and put it in his room. For the next couple of weeks he was haunted by this gnome in the corner of his bedroom and ended up having to break into the grounds again to return it.

*wasn't me (honest) - I'd never have made it over a six foot wall then or now.

This sounds about right. If you take a gnome from it's established territory they can become aggressive and emit a pheromone that can deeply upset humans.
