    A place called Penistone.
I haven’t been up theer for years
I hate it up theer. All those bleak places on top of, or nearly on top of the moors.
Always wet and cold - and full of long haired rocker types stuck in the 1970s.
Jeez - not looking forward to it.

You've definitely not been up there in a while, I was there earlier this year and it was rammed with Kappa wearing coke heads acting all belligerent, thinking they were fookin Mike Tyson or summert.

Used to always drop in at the Chippy in Penistone, when we were supervising young people
doing their practice expeditions in and around the Ingbirchworth area in July every year.
Greggs also very popular with our Staff team and parent volunteers.

Always remember on one expedition, we had a lad with a severe disability who was in a wheelchair and needed constant supervision. He had a pack on the back of his chair which contained his urine bottle.

It was so hot, he was drinking copious amounts of water. So that I was able to help him, every time he needed to " go", so as not to embarras him in front of his group some of who were girls, we agreed a verbal code after which, we could wheel him behind a hedge or into a field to do the business.

The code was " do you know, I think Barnsley could be promoted next season." It would have been OK if he'd have only had to say it once, but on one day he must have said it a dozen times much to the displeasure of some of the Leeds supporting members of the group. Thankfully the code for a No 2, " I don't think Leeds will be promoted next season" was never uttered.

Back then the town seemed to be reasonably quiet and looked OK and like many places in and around Barnsley, the countryside is very picturesque. I often used to say to my colleagues that I wouldn't have minded living in the area myself.

For a man interested in wildlife you don't seem to like the outdoors that much!!

I’m able to reciprocate. Dread going over to the Eastside, particularly to that shithole that is the Dearne Valley.

Proper Barnsley is from TARN centre through Lundwood Cuduth, Grimmy, Houghton, Darfield, Wombwell, Goldthorpe, Thurnsca, Bolton....... and I suppose yer could tag Hemswuth, Brampton, Waff and Mexboro onto that.

On 15th April I set off on my www.wildyorkshireway.co.uk walk. On day 1 the route took me past Worsbrough, Wombwell, Old Moor, Manvers and Bolton. Beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife and birdlife everywhere. Only downside was enormous amounts of litter along the route.

Then on 27th May, day 43, the route took me over Wharncliffe Crags, then past Wortley, Thurgoland, Oxspring, Silkstone Common and Dodworth. Beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife and birdlife everywhere. Hardly any litter anywhere too.

I've no idea why there should be this difference, but I'm proud to claim both bits of the walk being in my home town.

A comparison cannot be made between the abundance of wildlife along the Dearne that stretches from Cudeth to near Harrington - and the wildlife outside of that area.
There are specialists as you start to go higher in the district - things like:
    Red grouse
    Breeding Wood Warbler and Redstart.
But much much more is found along the Lower Dearne Valley.

As for litter - those towns and villages along the Dearne are industrial towns where mainly manual jobs are/were found.
As I said - different mindset.

Anyway - whose talking about wildlife.
    I’m not.
I’m talking about the place itself - and some of the time travelers you find up there on those far flung moors.

Not sure what that has to do with dropping litter everywhere. Don't they have bins in "industrial towns"?
