I remember because it was an odd transaction process. I don't believe they were actually in public circulation and my dad had to get them from the bank in person with proof of purchase etc. So basically the bank knew my dad had the notes and where they were going.
Never heard of notes bigger than 500 and they even stopped them due to fears of criminal activity. Even searching Google produces no record of notes that size. Sure it wasn't 500s?
She’d be 94 now so I’d hazard a guess we’d be just as f*cked as we were back when she was in power. What that’s got to do with Alan Turing however il never know.
No i've heard him tell a few people over the years and he's absolutely not known for exaggeration nor any reason to. Like i said as far as i'm aware they were never in public circulation just used for large purchases and it had to go through the banks
But she isn’t in power. She’s rotting in the ground and every day she’s there is another day the sun shines a bit brighter.
Recent (boring) programme about The Bank of England - showed the vaults where money is stored. They had 1,000,000 pound notes there. can't recall why they had notes of such high value - unless they're used to pay some foreign leader off in readies - but definitely there but not in circulation (when I press the sign for pound I get # and when I press # I get \ )
Turing, Thatcher along with Stephen Hawking and Ada Lovelace (mathematician) were the main contenders for the 'face' of the 50 pound note. Governor of the B of E chose Turing.
How long will it be before coins and notes are obsolete - isn't it Sweden who are already pioneering a cash/note less economy?
Ah really, wow that’s some list she got herself on. I don’t think they really thought it through did they.
Its your keyboard on the ENG-US mapping. You need to switch it over to ENG-UK (should be control panel > Time & Language -> Language)
It's quite a unique British thing that there is an aversion to the 'Big Banknotes' when other countries have no such worries. The US have $100 bill the Europeans 100 Euros. When I lived in Hong Kong 30 years ago there was a $1000 (£100) note.
I've had a few £50 notes, usually when I withdraw a large amount of money and they are available from the dispenser. It's true though that some places just won't accept them which I find strange.
Can people legally refuse to take£50 notes They are legal tender so I don’t know if you can insist someone takes one. I have had them in my possession a few times but don’t tend to use cash for large purchases so it’s rare I did once request €100 when in Germany from an ATM and got just the one note. Felt a bit stupid buying a couple of beers with it but waitress didn’t give it a second glance as she gave me the change
