So you have to buy the full kit and then it costs you 200 odd quid. Great experience for kids but its a bit steep.....

Also - "£200 plus VAT". Come on BFC, were not in America. It's £240.

Sure back in the day it used to be free to be a mascot if you got picked by the club.

Might sound expensive but sadly £240 is similar to what other local clubs.

Same price as the massive Wednesday, and a fraction of the £360 Sheffield United are charging for ‘premium’ games this season. (And they’ve already sold out for the 19/20 season).

Rovrum charge £250 but you do get a replica kit provided and a signed ball presented by the man if the match.

Might be good if BFC could sweeten the deal a bit with something like that?

My lad was a mascot a few years ago and the whole experience was amazing. He was really well looked after and enjoyed every minute. I’d recommend it to anyone thinking about it - even for £240.

Full kit plus £240, (minus £15 for being a st holder - is it £30 off if both me and the son are st holders ... nope), cost for a full kit for my eleven year old (or my eight year old girl, the lad is maybe a bit old to do it) would be £96 - plus an extra tenner if you want a name and number.

    £240 + £106 (- £15 if st holder)

£346 (£331) - I’m sorry but that is just cashing in on the kids by the club. I’m not sure they need to do that, have they always charged?

I’ve never looked into it but I always thought it was free - to be honest I also assumed they gave them a kit too. Naive of me I guess.

I’m sure they’ll manage to sell all 23 but our future season ticket holders won’t necessarily come from the kids lucky enough to have better off mums and dads, wouldn’t it be better to engage the local kids and get them hooked? At the very least for £300 the kids should get to come to another game as well as the one at which they are mascot.

I could afford to do this if one of the kids really wanted to, the eleven year old is a bit too old to think it would be cool though. The eight year old has only been once and didn’t like anything about it except her burger, the youngest is only four and has not yet been - so it won’t effect me but I can’t help but think this is a PR faux pas.

Does anybody know if it’s the done thing to charge for mascots?

My daughter was selected to be a mascot a few years ago - no charge at that time although I think you could pay to become a mascot if you weren't selected. (there was another mascot with her whose father had paid for him.)
It was a brilliant day - I think the guy who organised it was called Laurie. Oddly enough my daughter was allowed in the dressing room but her mother wasn't!

Would I pay 300+ - absolutely not - the club should be making it easier for all youngsters to become involved not just the well-off ones.

No. There’s a whole bunch of ways kids can get involved on a matchday and this is just one that combines the extra special oakwell hospitality experience with being a mascot and guarantees a particular game. The club get 3 or 4 each game and this also helps with the other activites that are put on pre game

Kids can also apply to be a mascot (still free of charge) for each game. If the away team dont have a mascot Laurie will choose one from the away end.

Steve Croft, his wife Linda and their son Matthew help with the flag bearer scheme. Junior football teams are invited to apply to take part
There is a nominal administration charge of £20 per team and in return for this a free ticket is given to each player of that team (max 18).

Steve and Laurie also operate a charity called Oakwell wishes that provides football-related experiences at the club or an event involving Barnsley F C to those supporters less fortunate than others. (Often kids)

When my son was a mascot 6 years ago, it cost us just over £100. We got everything the current package offers plus the kit was thrown in aswell, and the seats were in an exec box and not the ESL as it now seems to suggest. Also got to have his picture with the MOM in a presentation in the legends suite after the game.

Only downside was a 4 0 battering by wigan , first game of the season after flickers great escape

My son was mascot away at Blackpool about 6 years ago. Free if you had a shirt and match tickets. Great experience Flitcroft was great with him as were Craine and David Perkins although I still have nightmares about seeing him in just a pair of budgie smugglers in the dressing room. Barry Ferguson was Blackpool captain and was also great. Only awkward point was that 3 Blackpool mascots had paid about £150 for the same experience. Not sure if this is still an option the club offer?

Yep personally think the club is charging too much now. My sons been a mascot a couple of times and it cost no more than £150 plus buying his kit. £240 is ludicrous no matter how much I love BFC.

As mentioned, the free option is also there and Laurie and his wife Lynn still look after the mascots.

Why? Makes no sense to me whatsoever.

If it's because players might be undressed, kids definitely shouldn't be in there...

    .
yeah i didn't understand that either. i'm assuming both boys and girls can be mascots, and there shouldn't be anything on view that's unsuitable for kids...so why not adult females? don't get it.

Makes me laugh that the article says 'understandably'. Can anyone on here understand it?

Can you tell me how to do that Gally? My daughter keeps asking if she can apply but there's no way on earth I can pay £300 for it.

There’s no way I’d be sending my imaginary daughter into a room that is classed as unsuitable for me to enter (excluding for medical reasons etc. of course).
