I agree in principle but are you referring to a specific incident?

 

We need to get over this "it's a joke" stuff. It is what it is and it's here to stay. And in fairness, if it gets decisions right then you can't complain.

 

Just think if we had years ago...."the hand of God" woulda been wiped out.

 

Would it? Officials might have considered it Unintentional. This is why VAR is still suspect. It still gives the officials something to judge upon.

 

If it isn't immediately clear on var you stick with a ref decision. It's not difficult but if you cant celebrate a goal as it goes in live football will suffer big time.

 

I'm surprised they're using it for a friendly.

 

They certainly came up with some strange decisions during the recent World Cup. Ellen White suffered in particular.

Still a regulation match though. Seriously, VAR is now a thing. Accept the thing.

When is better to try and iron out potential issues and give the refs practice in using the system?

I don’t like the whole idea of it, but it’s coming in and that’s that.

It’s not in the championship yet so at least there’s that.

VAR and goal line technology are two different things ;-)

 

I can't watch games anymore when it's used. So I guess I've accepted it and decided the sport is no longer for me. Not sure what I'll do if they start using it at Barnsley games. Probably the same as VAR destroys football as a spectacle for me. The best thrill in football (in much of life) is the simultaneous reaction of the net bulging and you/your mates/your family/your fellow supporters leaping about like lunatics in mass celebration. When the ref leaves the field to watch the TV the moment has gone. When the players and the crowd all pause, to see if the ref is going to leave the field to watch some TV, the moment has gone. And so has what made supporting football good - that primal release of pure joy. They've killed a beautiful thing.

I can understand why people would fear this being the case but personally I don't think it will take away from celebrating goals. For starters not all goals will be checked by VAR. And yes there may be occasions when your team scores, you celebrate and then you realise that it's gone to VAR. But that to me is just the same as celebrating then realising the linesman has his flag up, or the ref has ruled it out for another reason. Only time will tell but when I've watched England score on the telly recently I still experienced the same level of excitement as I have in the past. And yes on some occasions it has subsequently been ruled out for VAR, but that didn't make me hold back in the first place.

 

What I have found with it is when the refs who are watching tell the on field ref he may have made a mistake he invariably changes his mind. Once the idea they have for it wromg is planted then that's what they see when they watch the replay. The penalty the England women were given in the semi final was a prime example.
I just don't get why the refs watching on the tv monitors can't just overrule the ref on the pitch. It would cut down on the delays so much, I would also rather see a tennis/cricket style system where each side is given a pre set amount of challenges.
