I flirted with far left politics at Cambridge but came to the view that there is something inherently wrong with being young and politically earnest and chose instead to concentrate on flirting with the prettiest girls.
3 marriages later I remain convinced I took the right course.

At last someone at the helm who will tell the Eurocrats what to do and finally deliver on the mandate to take us out of Europe. I see him in the mould of Churchill - he was a Tory too, not completely liked, larger than life - but he led us through the war and I trust in Boris to lead us out of the EU, to gain control of our borders and choose who we let into the country, to tackle the social issues facing the country, to make Barnsley great again......to do all this and to sort out the sorry mess concerning kippers, and to introduce the sport of whiff whaff into the education system and to build more cycle paths than any other Prime Minister... anything else I've missed....

Of course a GE sees the choice of which party you fancy. Of course. But the leader of a party is massive in getting those votes.

You can't sit posting on here about how terrible Jeremy Corbyn is, how he's this and that, if you believe a GE sees folk voting purely for the party and its policies. The leader shapes the policies. That's why May was knackered because most of her party colleagues felt her policies were wrong, as did the Tory voters. So whilst yes, in essence it's a Party Vote, it does not in any way lessen my point (and that of many others) that Johnson has no mandate from the people. In fact, he said as much himself when Brown took over from Blair (another t'wat). But he'd like you to forget that now, because political 'experts' are saying he's already ruled out a GE.

The Tories didn't win the GE anyway. They had to align themselves with the DUP, hence their name these days of 'The Conservative & Unionists Party'.

So we got May foisted on us. Just as we've now got this pillock. A posh, rich, racist bigot whose failure in all walks of his privileged life speaks volumes.

A bloke who talks about black people being 'cannibals' or 'piccaninnies' with 'watermelon smiles'. Or asian women as 'letterboxes' and 'bank robbers'. An actual, clear and proper racist.

Yet when you turn on the TV or read the paper/internet, there's only one leader of a political party getting tarred with racism, despite there being no evidence to support such claims.

And today the new PM has appointed the CEO of Sky as a business adviser. Be interesting to see if Sky News stick with their current 'Brexit is bad' mantra.

He'll also build bridges in the Conservative Party. Ones with loads of foliage on them no doubt.

You’re right of course the leader can influence your vote but the reality is you are voting for the individual in your area. When you put that X on the box it didn’t cite the name of a party leader.
I certainly don’t, I look at the individual local candidate and what they stand for and go from there.

I’m also not saying I think he will do a good job I honestly don’t know is the reality, there is much to say not but equally the whole current Political set up isn’t working so needs something different.

Tories did win the GE btw just not enough to form a government

And now, when he breaks his promises and it all goes t1t5 up he can blame May. If he'd taken the job in '16 like everyone thought, he would have had to carry the can himself.

He’s undoubtedly learned, and knows his Plato from his Aristotle, but beyond the Latin soundbites and quotes from the classics, he’s fundamentally thick as pig-schitt. I’d fancy anyone on here.....well, almost anyone, to thrash his fat, privileged arse in a proper general knowledge quiz. Put it this way, he’d not make the Tipping Point final.

Boris is not in command. He will never be in command and never has been in command. Just because he is PM does not alter the fact. He is about as commanding as the lion in Wizard of Oz. He's a charlatan, a backstabber, a racist, a buffoon. a flip flopper and a squanderer of public money. Trouble is people like him cos he has 'character'. The country is now well and truly FOOKED ( to coin a nudgeresque phrase. I'm joining the foreign legion.

Looks like the ill informed chavs from the council estates with their protest votes have finally got the man to deliver Brexit.

Where as the sophisticated remainers are sucking their thumbs and crying for their mums saying life isn't fair again.

I find it disappointing that you can traduce the reputation of the only Labour prime minister to win a general election in the last 45 years. Or to be more precise, three elections the narrowest of them by 66 seats. Okay, maybe he wasn't left wing enough for you, but surely there is some truth in the old maxim "politics is the art of the possible"? I respect your opinion and would defend your right to hold it, but how many years of Tory or pseudo-Tory rule are we going to have to put up with if we insist on ideological purity? Success is after all dependent not on what you or I would vote for, but what can carry a majority in the wider country, much of which is still conservative with a little and a big 'c'.

They always have been the "Conservative and Unionist Party" - that is the full name of the organization going back to the 1860s.

I equally respect your views, and I've asked you lots of times because I respect your view but haven't received an answer, how a centre left Labour party delivers a majority in a post-Brexit, post-SNP world?
