I'll be honest I didnt rate him either he did have a few good games sunderland at home was stand out. We had a million pound bid turned down two seasons back cant say I was too disappointed.
All about opinions but I thought he controlled games in a no fuss, efficient manner. Good in the tackle and rarely wasted a ball. Was gutted when we ballsed up his permanent transfer. It’ll be another daft Twitter rumour but it’d be a yes from me.
It amazes me that people listen but don’t hear what’s being said in interviews from the club. More experienced - does not mean ‘older’. It means - ‘played more games at this level’. I’d be shocked to see Morsy back at the club - or any player 28 years old. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want him back at Barnsley - because I do.
I felt Williams was better than Morsy. Or at least had the potential to be. I’d love either back but Williams was playing in a far inferior side, the side Morsy was in in late 2016 was light years ahead, and Williams was often with Gardner and so with no creativity alongside him. It is difficult to compare them fairly. I wouldn’t be disappointed if we brought Morsy in but I’d rather Williams, though I guess I’m in a minority there. I just think in the current squad he’d fit in well and would do a job against better sides.
Really rated them both & would like either back. Different types of central midfielders really. Morsy was really good on the ball & had a great first touch to get him out of danger, he got stuck in but wasn’t the most athletic of players. Williams had a terrific engine & was great at winning the ball & covering for his team mates but was never a creative midfielder although to be fair in a pressing side like ours he wouldn’t need to be.
I would think it’s a case of who is available and who we can afford for the ‘very few’ experienced signings Stendel has mentioned I know the club’s philosophy regarding age, but experience and age usually come hand-in-hand. If you come across someone under 24 with 100+ Champ Games experience, you’ll soon find we can’t afford him. Going a touch older makes him affordable. So long as the focus and desire is still there, that’s the main thing.
He was also the first out and furthest upfield to close down the opposition when the ball was cleared. He made more tackles than the other midfielders and could pass the ball as equally well. I do wonder whether any of our 'armchair pundits' ever played the game.
I’m not disputing his ability, just pointing out that statistic isn’t exactly the sign of a great player. For what it’s worth, I think his fitness levels and pressing would suit our style of play well, and his age certainly puts him in our bracket.
