England can't make too many changes especially throwing debutants in against the Aussies, it's playing into their hands.
Like an earlier poster said, if Joe Root thinks England played well then he should step aside, Burns century has got to go down as the luckiest 100 scored in test cricket played and missed on a 50 odd occasions, Denly is a disaster at this level, Ali is an all rounder in the sense that his game is ***** all the way round, the lad Anderson HAS been a great cricketer for club and country, but, its Roy Orbison now for him, Bsirdtow looks bereft of form and we can only hope he finds his game sharpish. To have the opposition at 122 for 8 and throw it away is a sporting crime that only England it seems could pull off. I'm an Englishman and a Yorkshireman and I truly want Root to succeed, but, I fear the lad looks like a schoolboy lost as captain. I've got a ticket for the 1st day at Headingley and the promise of copious amounts of titty and great company are the only things I'm looking forward to.
Steve Smith has never seen genius. That's a disgrace to put him in the category of players who didn't captain cheats. But irrespective of that, there are plenty of players who might see that their game is better suited to longevity and not flourish and an ECB central contract still nets you close to half a million. That's not too shabby, Cricket at the moment is at a very low ebb with some awful players getting test caps. Once Broad and Anderson move along, I'm really not sure who we'll have left who are good enough to represent us.
The pundits on the BBC Cricket page seem to be advocating that changes need to be made. It will be very interesting to see what the selectors decide to do in the end. There surely must be some players from the various Counties who could come in and do a better job than we've seen during the first Test.?
Steve Smith is a genuinely talented batsman, but, he's an outright cheat which makes it all the more distasteful that he chose to corrupt the game that he plays so well.
I disagree. he's highly unorthodox. And so we unimaginatively go 5th stump line... hmm, he's not bored now he's seeing it like a football. Leg stump...ooh, going for boundaries, hmm, lets try short, oh, seeing it like a football and we've no venomous pace. He's really not that good. In any other era he would be averaging single figures.
The first Test could have been very different, we had them 122-8, if we'd knocked them over for 150 it's a different game. We crumbled over the last 2 days but we basically won the first three. Knee jerk reactions is playing into their hands. Ali has to go mind .
Correct mate. Like watching Cristiano Ronaldo throwing himself to the floor and feigning injury, world class talents who could rely on their gifts alone but they have to try take it too far and gain unfair advantages.
So we might as well give up? What a defeatist attitude. As for your first point check the averages, second only to Bradman. To say he’d average single figures in any other era is just a bit daft. whether you think altering the condition of the ball makes him less of a genius that’s entirely up to you, he wasn’t the first and won’t be the last to try and obtain an advantage.
We lost this game because Anderson only bowled 4 overs. We would/should have bowled them out for 150 in the first innings if he was bowling in tandem with the others: the game then would have taken on a whole different complexion. I said in australia's first innings that i was disappointed that Anderson was playing in this game, indeed playing cricket at all. He should have retired last season, has been plagued by injuries this season and has rarely played. Very poor from the selectors allowing Jimmy to continue to play on his ego.
An odd quantum leap you've taken there. I don't know where we go from here. The current crop after Broad and Anderson aren't good enough. Woakes could tick over. Curran S could offer a bit of grit. I'd likely bring Foakes in as a proper wicket keeper, but the rest of the batting line up, even if root could get in nick and convert to 100, I think i'd go to the counties with a plan for what the batting line up should be like and start afresh. if genius is hitting moon balls for a single while trying to play tennis, sure he fits the bill. He's a weird player. Averages bowlers of this ilk don't have the ability to think and just bowl poorly at him. Stick the old windies team in front of him, you'd see how much of a genius he is then. For me he's a cheating anomaly who should have been given a life ban.
Quantum leap? You are advocating sacking the entire lot now, starting a fresh and finding “someone” in county cricket. Be sure to ring up the selectors with that one I’m sure they haven't thought about looking in the counties. Are you also saying that every bowler in world cricket over the last 4 to 5 years are incapable of thought? And only the West Indies of the 70’s and 80’s are? I think you need a cold beer mate!
Now don't go getting obtuse. If you're going to take a comment then take it into hyperbole and beyond, theres little point in having a discussion. If you think this team is good enough to win against a very poor Australia team, fine. We very much disagree. if you think modern players are better than many of their prior generations, fine, and we again, very much disagree. Ah.... now I know.. you're Joe Root. No other reason to be so defensive of the current crop! ;-)
You’ve been sensationalist and beyond for the last 5 days! good players are good players, form may come and go but if there were better options in the counties they would be playing. A couple of them will be next week I’m sure
