It's just a simple big of lingo to point out we need to have the ability to adjust tactically when needed. e.g yesterday Wednesday were happy to let's us have the ball as they were confident we wouldn't be able to do much with it. This negated our high press as its difficult to press when you actually have the ball.
I've often thought like that too. Often, when a team is 1 - 0 down with 5 minutes to go, they push a central defender up front, throw men forward, play 3 or less at the back, and pump long balls into the box. If that's the best way of getting a goal, why not play like that for the entire match?
All about risk. With 5 mins to go at 1-0 down you don’t mind leaving yourself open by throwing men forward. If you did that all game we’d be calling for managers head after 5 games saying they are tactically inept. I didn’t go yesterday but i’ve said from last season that we don’t appear to have a plan b which is slightly worrying in this league.
Because you're more likely to concede a goal. But if you're already losing with little time remaining conceding a goal isn't the biggest worry, it's not scoring. So you weaken your defence to strengthen your attack.
We do have a plan B. It's trying to win football games. Plan A is to make as much money as possible by trading players.
Spot on with your analysis. I thought Bullen was very astute with how he set his team up, I just hope other managers weren't watching!!
But winning football games at a higher level requires investment in players which is gained either from trading or from a massive outside investment. I'd rather we traded and kept the club sustainable than gambled outside money on success that would put the club in financial jeopardy (again)
I think up front is a major concern. Woodrow’s a superb finisher but has little else to his game, there’s big question marks over Miller & Chaplin at this level as neither have done much in the league below. Schmidt’s an interesting one as he’s 6 foot 1 & has a decent goal scoring record, hopefully he can be a player who can hold a ball up & bring others into play. If Schmidt isn’t up to much I think we’ll really struggle for goals. The rest of the team is ok I think. A few teething problems yesterday but I think the two centre backs & goalie are good enough & when everyone’s available there’s plenty of competition at full back so we’ll be ok there. I like the midfield, just need to get Dougall fit as I reckon in derby games like yesterday we’ll be better served with him at the side of Mowatt & then use McGeehan further forward in place of Bahre like we played a few times last season.
In yesterday’s game I saw Woodrow denied by a save their keeper knew nothing about and at least 2 shots blocked by defenders on their goal line. We didn’t have the best of games, all our players seemed below par compared to the Fulham match but a little luck yesterday and it would have been a completely different game. A howler from an experienced Championship player gifted them a goal right at the start of the match and that is always going to change how a game pans out. Onwards and upwards I say.
Reading in today’s paper that Bullen had us watched last week, and said that Barnsley played well and that we pressed Fulham to death. So he changed tactics and pressed us .Been found out already and we are only 2matches in.Happy days.
A few teams did that to us last season sometimes to good effect. We play it all the time though so we should be able to cope with most that try it against us.
