I have an interest in the Romanian team Cluj as I visited the town a few years ago and it was a brilliant place. You may have noticed that they beat Celtic in a remarkable match last night in the Champions League qualifier. What was amazing was the stats of the match. Score 3-4 (high and unexpected but clearly not extraordinary) 50% possession each (fair enough) but.. shots Celtic 3 - Cluj 4 ( all shots on target ). In other words apart from the goals there wasn’t a single other shot on or off target. Is that believable?
Given the stats also suggest that the teams also played a total of two passes each in the game, nobody completed a dribble, made a tackle or interception, the game had no fouls yet four yellow cards, I’m inclined to think they might not be quite right.
Also, no corners yet the BBC report says 'From a corner, the ball carried to the back post and Scott Brown handled.'
I’d like to have seen possession stats for our team in the late 60’s and 70’s , ‘ keeper to Murphy , Murphy back to keeper ‘ we must have had 80% possession every match !!
Scrub this thread. Just found the accurate stats! Lots of shots. Significant only in Cluj having 8 shots all on target.
Another odd fact is that this season, we will play on every day of the week if fixtures remain as arranged. I can never remember playing on Thursday before, but our Christmas fixture is Thursday 26 December at home to West Brom.
Obviously not true I watched the game. Cluj 4th goal Bain saved a shot flying into the bottom corner and their lad scored the follow up.
Wigan (a) L2-3 Birmingham (h) L1-2 play-off semi-final Huddersfield (h) L0-1 play-off semi-final. I think!
We beat Hartlepool United 1-0 on Maundy Thursday 1979, when we won promotion under Allan Clarke from the old Fourth Division.
We played away at Preston on Thu 8th Nov 2001, a 2-2 draw, with goals from Darren Barnard and Alex Neil. I think Preston equalised near the end. I could be mistaken, but it was our first ever televised game on a Thursday, broadcast on ITV Digital.
Thanks. I wish I could claim it as my own. It cheered me up when I got home in a fvcking horrific mood last night!
