VAR for the Man City - Spurs game was Graham Scott, assisted by Andrew Halliday. Theres a forum called rate the ref which publishes all appointments and has a discussion forum which mostly focuses on individual performances/incidents throughout the leagues.
VAR HQ is apparently in Stockley Park London. Prior to the start of the season, every Premiership manager was invited to look round to get a better understanding as to how the system would be used. It's always going to have its critics, but at the end of the day, it's a way of hopefully making certain that crucial decisions are clarified. If I were Man City, I would feel aggrieved at yesterday's decision to cancel what looked to be a perfectly good goal by Jesus. It looked as though it was difficult for Laporte to avoid the ball brushing his arm prior to the shot, but they have to accept it.
VAR has not decided that in the above circumstances, the goal will be disallowed. That is the rules book. VAR is simply being used to determine the facts. VAR was not wrong, the rule book is.
They have to accept it because VARis right even when it’s wrong. The thing is if it brushes a defenders arm in the same way or even strikes a defender full on the arm on the line stopping a certain goal it’s not handball, how can it be right to have such a stupid bias in favour of stopping goals being scored. It’s as if we had a rule that said a defender can’t give a penalty away by pushing or holding an attacker but if an attacker makes any contact with a defender in winning the ball and scoring it’s a foul. It’s ruining football
The handball rule is just stupid and shows just how inept the custodians of our game are. The rule that forced the goal for City to be disallowed is beyond ridiculous.
What about the penalty that wasn't awarded, who on earth can look at that and say it's not a penalty, he had him around the neck and wrestled him to the floor.
Unfortunately, because of the very nature of decisions that will be referred to VAR, VAR equals fewer goals. That was always my problem with these automatic reviews. They will review every goal, and disallow many. They will not be able to review every decision the ref makes in the build up to an attack, nor be able to recreate the lost chance that resulted from a wrong decision by the ref. Therefore VAR reduces the number of goals and refs reduce the number of opportunities to put right that imbalance. What we must establish is whether righting some of the wrongs is acceptable if it is impossible to right all of the wrongs.
Why I dont bet on football - I'd be a bit miffed if I had had that bet and it had been lost for that reason - but its not one I would ever have made
