I used the A38 the other week to go down to Dudley and it was absolutely fine although I've just checked Google Maps and it is currently showing a travel time of 2 hours 30 mins (from Oakwell to St Andrews) if going down the A38. I think you're safer bet may be to go M1, A42, M42 and M6.

I use to live in Birmingham mate.. the M/A42 is a better and quicker route, even tho its more miles than the 38.

We use the A38 when we visit my Sis and her husband in Walsall. It's normally fairly trouble free.
You can make good time after leaving the M1 up to the roads leading into Brum. I always
allow 2 hours 15 minutes from Wakefield to Walsall.

Only problem you might encounter is at the roundabout near Derby. It's usually very
congested with traffic going to and from the City at tea time, plus Derby are at home
against Bristol City tonight, so there will be additional away support making their way
    into Derby.

A38 is always hit and miss with Traffic. as others said A42 etc more realistic and more often quicker

If we were playing Walsall/Wolves then it would be the A38 ever time..
